i guess bringing trance to the masses is the only real way of acheiving that, and i guess slowly converting your rock-loving troglodite friends its afirst step in doing so.. I am beginning this with much sucess so far.
Step 1 is removing their pre-conceived judgements of trance, and this is pretty easy to do by playing them quality music. |
word to that!!
Last night I played some breaks into some quality trance at a more house/breaks sort of bar.
Some people commented and were impressed with the style, one guy asked me if I was selling any cd's:)
I will try my best to slowly convert them one by one:haha: |

OK I'm on a roll here.... hehe
One more comment/theory I have is that trance and prog also, (but to a slightly lesser extent), are to me much more emotional genre's. To go out every weekend and experience the same level of euphoria the one gets from trance, to me, would end up being very draining and would then be detremental to the scene.
Hence the need for a 'base' of people to draw a % from to make the numbers on the door. Crews working together and being respectful by not throwing parties on the same weekends and draining the pool of interested people and not 'overcooking' the genre or having peple feel torn about where they are going to go on saturday night. I know at UNIFY we are always trying to be mindfull of what else is on, not only so our's and other parties go well, but also for the good fo the scene. It's not always possible, but we do try. |

I'd just like to jump in here in defence of the nrg scene..
I think there's a little too much generalisation going on here. OK yes there are drugs and unfortunatly there are alot of young people chugging down G and ing themselves up. (Say no to G kiddies...)
But I see about 4 to 5 people a night do this.. in a club of about 300. I find that generally the people are very nice. I had one guy come up to me at Tracid Traxx and talk to me for about 15 minutes... So I have to say the general atmosphere is a very positive one.

You may well be right there.. I find that there is a higher ratio of 18, 19, 20 year olds. I myself am only 18 (A youngin' I know
:stongue: ) But this dose not mean I attend these events to myself up and listen to jackhammers all night.
So casting the idea that those in attendance of the nrg scene are simply stupid children that wanna do drugs and will one day learn that trance is the true form of music is a little unfair in my opinion.
(I'm done now... commence flaming....) |

| NO flaming needed G'Dave, you are one of the minority. :-) It's not just the youngen's going out with the wrong idea's about what makes a night a good one. |

Just interested,
What is your view on Uplifting Hard Trance? Do you classify it as Trance or NRG.
Anyway I resent the comments made against Hard Kandy, really the crowd since the memberships has been brilliant and I can see the crowd at the new venue is gonna be great too (but I am biased as a promoter)
Anyway if you guys want to see Uplifting trance given a bit of a go why not start talking with the big weekly clubs and try and get something going. I know and Kandy we had 5am vs Kandy and I can tell you the music was fantastic on that night, a great change.
At the new venue we have a very large second room so why not start talking with Kandy to try and set up uplifting nights in the second room, Smile Police will be hosting it for the next couple of weeks but we are seriously up for suggestions. If you want something done do it dont sit back and complain.
That said I would like a little bit more trance in the scene but I am not too fussed, I will put the idea forward to the kollective but we need support from the punters to put in such a chance, that said 5am vs Kandy was definatley a success. |

I cant say im a lover of nrg. Dont get me wrong, i'm not the type to bag it or assume everyone who listens to it is the same stereotype, but I do enjoy listening to a dj who knows how to play hard trance.
I think Jules might have made the best point yet. Maybe we are just lacking a big "status" trance dj. I think Melbourne has Dj's with talent to rival any in the world, just not the names.
I have noticed that "younger" clubbers will love a dj's reputation rather than know what the he is playing , how he plays it, or why we does the things he does.
You have to give credit to the tekno crowd as far as this goes. I've met people who have been in the tekno scene for only a year or so and know as much as I do having been in it for seven. They know their dj's, producer's, and mixing techniques better than any as a group.
Just prior to new years I had two guys come to my work and said they were going to "together" when I asked if they were looking forward to seeing tiesto they said "Who? we're going to see midro." I said what do u like about midro to which they replied " he en rocks". I know this is a "not the case" with most but u can see what I'm getting at.
Am I alone in thinking this?..... |

hehehehe Midro>Tiesto?? LOL
No your not alone in thinking that often its all about the name, but to a cirtian exctent the same goes for Tiesto. Like Tiesto is good but saying he is #1 is a little absurd, its all about reputation. |

Nothing against midro by what I said, he is a very popular dj, just using it as an example. ( that was a true story!)
The same goes for the super club brands though. One of my girlfriends mates has just started partying and would not shut up when gods kitchen toured last year, "I cant wait, I can't wait, I can't wait.... I LOVE GODS KITCHEN" yet she says she only likes nrg not trance. As to be expected she hated the night. hehe. Funnily though, last week she made the comment that she is over nrg and loves trance.... work that out? |
