Review: Johan Gielen @ The Docks!!! (pg. 3)

Gielen is definitely a great dj. Not so much for his mixing skills (though his mixing was really solid, in parts) but for communicating with a crowd, and keeping a vibe going (the vibe sort of reminded me of Fleming when he played at Sound Emporium last year, small crowd but everyone was into it).

Godskitchen@theDocks had a sort of MacDonalds club flavor to it. I mean the sound was great (a vocal track didn't seem clear tho) and the space to dance was wicked, but I looked around and it sort of seemed very "recreated." Stereotypical. That's probably the right word.

Other than that I hope it remains a well kept secret.

The funniest thing was asking for directions and walking up to some employees and going "So where is Gielen playing at?" And getting blank stares.

-I didn't see a bus at Union (10-10:30). No guestlist. :conf:

Johan spun a really energetic set. Kept me on my toes all night. The vibe was much better than at George Acosta. Place wasn't packed but the crowd was really into it. The major reason being Johan's crowd interaction. He sure does know how to get a crowd going and the man had this huge smile on his face the whole time. Kinda reminded me of Armin. Gielen wrapped up his set just before 4AM.

My tracks of the night have to be airwave and the born slippy rmx (I can't get enough of this track :toothless) Big shoutout to maxtuh who I hung with all night. RobbyG, always a pleasure running into you. All the other TAs great seeing you all getting down on the dance floor.

Last but not least, d!abolic, nice to finally put a face to the name. Do you even remember meeting maxtuh and I? :tongue2 Hope you didn't lose your car again.

RJ... you missed out!!!

After the docks I headed over to Systems to catch Deko-ze on the decks. He was pounding out a super hard prog set and had the place jumpin. Nice running into Jeff (Firestarter) and Silke. The true party animalz. :D

some people are impressed enough by the set list, and not as turned off as the club and expected experience as you might have been.

i'm impressed by mixing and tech skills, but face it, i'll have a much better time if a DJ's setlist appeals to me and their skills suck (moderately), than if their skills are on point and they play tracks that i can't stand.

Just being impressed by a set list isn't enough to be raving amazing reviews about a DJ. I've heard good set lists from the tiest bedroom dj's out there but they can't mix worth a dime.

Johan's mixing was lacking and his beatmatching was off. maybe he was having a bad night?

he certainly was entertaining with his standing on the top of the balcony and junk but i guess to impress me you need to have serious skills... especially when you've been around as long as that guy has.

Richard - I have to admin that I didn't quite know what to expect from your set @ SystemS - but I left thoroughly impressed. It was an amazing journey.

You've got fan for life in me.

I agree...don't forget, my quote said that I take great note of a DJ's skills as well, but I'm just saying my night wouldn't be ruined if he had a trainwreck here and there, as opposed to dropping tracks all night with superior beatmatching and tech skills.

I dont see the big deal

If he is playing awesome music and people are going off and the vibe is tight than who gives a crap if he trainwrecks once in a while. The point is going to have fun, not trying to watch him beatmatch every song
