| the thug culture has become widespread, its not just blacks. Actually its sort of rare to see a black person in vancouver, i guess its just how it is. i have no problem with the real hiphop junkies in van, and i know a quite a few, but its the people who dont act themselfs, the fakes who act thuggish, and try to rep and talk about hard life, when some that ive met live in mansions on the far end of the westside...pathetic |

Fact is, yes there are people like this. And even though I think the way media portray's things may not always be right, when people start believing that what they see on TV is the way people are, then there is seriously something wrong with them. People have to remember that TV was & is done for entertainment, not to depict an entire race of people.

In some slight response to Essentials post:
If blacks were so worried and wanted to have their own "first" class television show to prove they are making progress in America...
I would say they failed in their purpose. The smart thing to do would be to fight for normal roles. Like the African American presidential candidate in the first season of 24. I loved that guy. Really strong character. That kind of action should be lobbied. Place blacks in strong leadership roles without any of the usual bull. |

I agree that the most refreshing thing about the character in 24 was that his colour was pretty much a complete non-issue (other than a brief theory that this could have been a motive for the assasination attempts). I've only seen season 1 though so things may have changed, I hope not.
It's going to be a loooooooong time before America accepts a black presidential candidate, and when this does happen he/she wont be "the president", they'll be "the black president". Race is a mssive issue over there from what I can tell. |

| Yeah, although I have to admit the first black president would be a badass because he knows he really just taking one for the team and opening the door for others to step though. However, someone with that strong of character would hopefully be able to do a LOT with their powers. |

Man im kinda glad i posted this, im really liking the replies. The weird thing is, i go say this to one of my friends, and they're like WTF? I tell people I know this and they look at me funny. Yet i tell it to people who've faces i've never seen and they understand me completely.
As for the black president thing, i agree with you on that one. There should be a black or whatever color president without the emphasis on the color. Like Morgan Freeman (sp?) in Deep Impact. I don't remember the movie that well (it wasn't that good) but they didnt refer to his race once. Also, i've never seen a latino\hispanic nor an asian guy ever even attempt a presidency in the movies and what about women?
For the Dave Chappelle thing. He's not your normal black comedian because although he does use stereotypes to make his comedy, he doesn't play within the stereotypes. He overexaggerates completely to show just how dumb some of the really is. The racial draft was a good example. That was just completely outrageous.
I got a lil bit to say about the 'N' word too. I don't even pay it any attention. IF people want to use it let them. It doesn't affect me, and it's more of a reflection on them then it is on me. The only way to really get rid of it, is to not pay it any attention. One of the main reasons people still say it, is because it has power to "excuse" a black man acting uncivilized. Now if a person decides to put his hands on you, then that's a different story...
But yeah good posts, keep the thoughts comin. |

What do you mean by "u guys"? Clearly you aren't referring to NomadaNare. He is one of the most intelligent posters that I have seen on TA. Not necessarily because of this thread because it is a very touchy subject. It's his objectiveness and well thought out posts. |

I'm refreshed that you see it that way. Political advocacy groups who claim to represent minority groups such as blacks, women, and homosexuals work very hard to brainwash their "constituency" into self-imposed victimhood. They - of course - don't simply ignore insults or epithets, but feel the need to aggressively crusade against them, while slyly implying that these incidents are indicative of a pervasive social "hatred."
It's really self-serving, though. They're raking in hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars to pretend they're defending the rights of minority groups. But if they ever eradicated racism or sexism the money flow would stop. So they don't really want to solve anything, they just put on a good show for everyone, collect some donations, and pay themselves outrageous salaries. I must give them credit, it's an excellent scam. But the actual damage they do to the groups they purport to represent is much greater than one might imagine.
90% of the people who use the "N word" from time to time are not very racist... perhaps only slightly so. You can either ignore it, and show them your inner strength, or you can allow it to control you, and reinforce their beliefs. One choice helps fight racism; the other helps strengthen it. I'm always glad to see people who know how to make the right choice. |
