I'll be upgrading my comp soon, and building another for a friend.
I have a spare Dell P4 2.0 sitting around, so gonna sell that.

- Athlon64 3000-3200 seems to be the way to go at the moment. On an
- Asus A8V Deluxe MB with WiFi.
- Can't decide between a Radeon 9800 Pro or the Radeon x800, There's $200 difference between them.. so it might come down to the dosh.
- 512MB DDR 3200

That should run Doom3 comfortably.

I've been told to be careful of the ATI graphics cards as their OpenGL Support (Doom3) is not as good as NVidia's, and one of my friends has been having trouble with his comp locking up during Doom3.

Ati will new catalyst drivers out soon, with doom3 "optimisation".

That system is pretty much exactly (mobo - except a K8V dont u mean? A8V is for FX processors?-, cpu) what i came up with after reading through a heap of reviews!

Except - get a GB of RAM - so worth it, and if you can, get the x800pro - performance jump is heaps :)

don't bother with the 9800 pro, if you want to save the money when the time comes for you to purchase your parts, go for a 256mb 9600XT over a 9800pro.

the asus a8v deluxe mobo supports 939-pin cpus. AMD Athlon 64s (not the FX's) come in either 939-pin (3800+ & 3500+) or 754-pin (the others).

the FX-51 comes in 939-pin, and the FX-53 can be found in both 939-pin & 940-pin.

GEFORCE 6800 (both GT and Ultra versions) ownz ATI (X800, Pro and XT PE versions) in Doom3 period! In other games the story is slightly different.

yeh, have to agree with Christos, the GeForce 6800 pulls ahead in Doom II over the ATI card...

but in other games the X800 beats it..

NO matter, us mac plebs only get the choice of a 9800 XT or a 6800 Ultra DDL... so I guess I am getting the 6800 which is a generation above the 9800.

After coming down from the euphoria that was doom 3 i thought it really wasnt that great. I mean cmon for real, what game scares people, apart from the first 5mins you knew where the monsters would pop up, absolutely 0 story line and it was very linear if you get what i mean. The graphics were aite, sounds could have been better, but meh i guesss these games just not my cup of tea.

iD will then sell the engine to many developers as they always do - meaning the nVidia line is a good choice IF u have the dosh.

the x800pro is best value for money still.

ati will be better for HL2 - but that will be just pretty much the one game, with mods....

it really doesnt matter atm - the 6800 GT or x800pro are the best buys - the extra money spent for a few extra frames to go up to the flagship models isnt worth it imo....

im a geek atm :(

nvidia cards - suited for openGL based games (doom3)
ati cards - directx based games (halo, UT, farcry).
