Is the look of the DJ related to their success?

In most music genres the look of the musical artist plays some part in their success, its hard to imagine Britney Spears being so popular if she was 125kgs and had a facial birthmark.

DJs like Oakenfold, PvD and Tiesto sport unique, if not attractive looks, and one wonders whether this has a role to play in gaining wide popularity and standing out from the crowd.

Whats your thoughts?

What is the right look for a DJ if they want to be successful?

a 'unique'(everyone is beautiful, but it doesnt have to be traditional beauty) look always helps I guess.

Look at James Holden..no pin-up...but youd know who he was if you saw him walking down the street

I'll admit that people are superficial, but also it helps to have a look of success. Especially when you're a top notch dj. Trendy or fashionable clothes could go a bit farther for you, but that's not always the case.

DJing is a combo of music and fashion.

In other genres, I completely agree. Good looks drive the popular musics industry. Although, once you take steps away from pop, and the mainstream, I believe that in most genres, you'll find it's not based on looks, but more the skill of the musician.

Trance, being more 'underground' still doesn't have such a huge emphasis on looking a certain part. Some dj's dress up for their gigs, some dont. And whether or not they do or dont doesn't really correspond with their popularity, or lack there of. I hope EDM doesn't move towards looks instead of skill and talent.

BUt i dont think looks matter.....come on look at the people from Slipknot:nervous: :wtf: OMG.....there uber ugly, but they seem to be pretty succesfull

In Australia all our DJs are ugly, so I wouldn't say that its a key for success by any means.

But I guess an image is important to a certain level to get a place in people's head in relation to the music you play.

It seems important to have lots of tattoos if you are in a rock band.

Not too many DJs sport long hair, but I guess why would you? And Djs do seem to be fashion conscience.

Come to Melbourne...if u want teh sexy DJ's

of course DJ's are fashion conscious...they are clubbers after all.

Carl Cox?

In all seriousness I thought EDm was all about the music. I hope it doesnt become like pop where the way a person looks plays a critical factor in his or her success.
People say clubbing/fashion go together...this is certainly true w/ "mainstream" clubbing (hip-hop/top 40 clubs). I thought the whole idea behind the original rave/underground scene was that it was "all about the music?" People could dress the way they want and just enjoy the music. I would hate to see trance and other EDM genres get to the point where little teen girls are dieing to see what shirt say Sasha sports at the next venue. LOL!
