Was your first love Progressive?

A lot of people go through stages of electronic music. This is the majority stage based on what I think.
You first listen to some catchey, fast trance music and/or hardhouse because it's fast and fun and exiting with fun and exiting build-up/breakdowns and find everything slow like progressive boring and not catchy.
Then as time goes by you start getting sick of the same build up/break down and suddenly progressive becomes a lot better to listen to because you develope patience for the music you listen to, and when that happens, it becomes god.
So, the question is, did anyone develope a love for progressive before they started listening to the catchy tunes of trance. Don't get me wrong, I still haven't lost my love for good trance tunes, but progressive is god. |

Yes, I did. That was however before prog descended into the dull, weak hole in which it finds itself nowadays and before over half the records that were released as "progressive" were as interesting as watching paint dry. I'd much rather listen to trance or techno nowadays. Of course, there are always some exceptions to this. (Holden and Border Community comes to mind) |

Indeed! :D What you are referring to, Sand Leaper, is sometimes non-affectionally dubbed as "bog prog" or "honk prog" or "fake prog" by luminaries like Chable & Holden (hey, now there's a duo ;) ).
I have been looking for the progressive sound (whatever it is at the moment for me) all my life, and have found it and continue to look. I've always maintained it is an attitude, a persistence of vision that goes beyond the music itself but applies itself to an altruistic philosophy of goodwill and sharing new ideas and acceptance of what works for you personally in a diverse world as you express yourself uniquely in return, continuing to perpetuate KEWL NEW SOUNDZ. :D
So feel free to wind back and slap it on as an adjective. "Progressive trance", "progressive house", "progressive doghouse", whateva.
If something's boring, maybe it's time to get out of that rut and play with some new ideas. Music's gotta be fun for me, no matter how technically well-produced or whatever. I wanna laugh and smile, sometimes I feel sad like Pikachu without Ash, but I just wanna feel something AND think at the same time.
Some "bog prog" is hilariously laughable in that what it's done is taken the big-room riffs of "commercial" trance away, and slowed the tempo down some and turned 8-bar repetitions into 32-bar or 64-bar ones. Simple tricks with the EQ knobs make things sound "dark and moody" and that brooding bassline you've heard on so many records? Baby, it IS the same, sampled over and over. Now, I don't mind gradual evolution, but for me, this unlawful cohabitation just ain't working out!
People definitely have very different ideas of what "progressive" is, and I of course am speaking solely to the tune of my personal preferences. But a good benchmark I often refer to is: http://www.progressive-sounds.com , which of course is quite ubiquitous in the field and highlights musicians with standout ideas (who are undeniably booed before their critics join the bandwagon in due time). Therefore, the new pioneers of the field like James Zabiela are hailed along with the forward-thinking but backwards-respecting insight such as Orbital.

| started out iwth goa style... then evolved into early stuff by pvd, gouryella etc.. can hardly listen to those tracks today tho |

No, what's funny is that people who like prog who used to like trance suddenly turn into elitist snobs towards those who like trance. |

An awful lot of it is the arrogance shown by progressive lovers that they're better people because they listen to something that isn't uplifting or something else, and that really pisses me off personally, their feelings that you always end in prog is totally wrong also, I've never liked prog, and i probably never will, it lacks energy apart from the odd track. I've gone through many better genres imho, epic trance, techno, psy, hardcore, old skool, d&b/jungle, all have more for me personally than prog. that does not make prog , just makes it a choice, and if ppl don't take that choice, it doesn't make them below those who do. If the people who thought that pissed off, again you might see me change my mind towards them, but music in general is something where every person will follow their own path, those who follow something cos it's a buzz word or cool are just sheep and a drain |

went the "usual" way, cheese to trance to prog, knows where i'm going to next
i reckon prog usually lacks the energy of trance and such, but my taste nowadays rather focus on the musical content rather than energy.. i don't care if it's danceable anymore, i'm only listening to it at home lol. but also gotta reckon the overall quality of prog has decreased lately with these weak "mcprog" tracks going on, though i do listen to them a bit |
