Im still a big fan of oakenfold and if i was looking for an all time favourite mix id be putting on an oakie mix.
Things move on and new faces take the limelight but you gotta respect what he has done for trance

Oakenfold didn't seem like he was going to retire last week when we brought him to play in Columbus and Cincinnati.

im supprised Tiesto would say that about a great friend, and mentor im sure. But he does have a point. Oakenfold has done it all, been everywhere, and there is noting really knew for him to accomplish in EDM. But, i think he still enjoys what he does, and thats the most important thing.

He would not be putting out a new mix cd next month, or a new artist album later this year, or doing the movie scores, or video game music, or running his record label, or, or or....it can go on for ever. The man works hard. Let him get all the free drugs and millions or dollars he wants at a club, as long as i get to see him play!

Ooooooh did I hear the sound of BT-bashing in here? ;)

Maybe he SHOULD retire. He bored the hell out of me last week when I saw him.

most of the early 40 deejay and mid 30 deejays won't retire till at least 50...all the money, women and drugs they can get....for free.

You know, in the world of serious art "neoclassical" (or whatever it is they're calling it these days) music, if you're in your 40s, you're still considered to be a "young composer". Compare that to pop -- Britney and Christina are getting up there in years... EDM is somewhere in between and all over the map.

i dont know what you are basing that on, considering we dont really have any stats to back that up. Most DJs which helped to start this 'scene' are still going, and have not retired. DJing in itself isnt as physical as, say playing in a band, and so i dont think the age is going to limit the retiring age of DJs.

I think that the love for the music, or lack there of, will tell a dj/producer when to walk away.

the money portion of being a dj isnt as simple as you make it seem either. There are a lot of expenses which go along with the job. Say the constant traveling, payments for air fare, trains, buses. How about the hotels, eating and drinking out...the vinyl, good god the vinyl. They have to spend a lot. Think of a A-List DJ as a mini business.

Think of the A List Deejays out there

Tiesto is up there (35?)
Digweed is as well (37)
Sasha is as well (35)
Tongy over 40
Carl Cox over 40
Paul Oakenfold over 40
Danny Tenaglia over 40
PvD - 33 this year
Judge Jules (not a list in my book but some think he is) (40+)
Sander Kleinenberg
Danny Howells (both in mid 30's)
Christopher Lawrence (nearly 40)
Armin and Zabiela and Fergie are the only ones not over 30
Nick Warren (40+ ??? No one knows)

Think the big names take most of the big radio shows, big gigs, big prime time slots at festivals and they are not getting any younger

Usually a dj has his flight covered, his meals covered and they are making a ton of money and whatever they spend, they write off on the tax return

see i'm not so sure if you can count out oakenfold for good...

don't forget that it was just a bit more than a year ago when he absolutely blew up Ultra 5... but then again everyone was playing really, really well at that time.
