Toronto's problems:
Transit - Transportation system - two words - IT SUCKS... we covered this not too long ago
NIMBYism- Not in My backyard - Little old ladies with nothing to do hold way too much complaint power in our supposed world class city. Just look at the island residents for an extreme example of what goes on all over the city.
Taxes - city hall's arrogance says that businesses will always want the prestige of being downtown so they will pay much higher taxes. Well tell that to the good folks at IBM, Magna, Kraft, etc etc who have all moved their offices to places like Markham and Vaughan. No corperate taxes = rise in household taxes = people moving the out so they can afford to live.
Political Correct Mayhem- lets solve the homeless crisis by helping the homeless instead of wasting money on politically correct bull schemes. Lets face it, most people on the streets are there because they have mental problems or are runaways. Maybe its time to bring these people in and give them the help the need intead of respecting their "right" to become a human popsicle on a cold jan night.
Entertainment - look at what the city does to entertainment facilities. Basically our liquor laws are antiquated not to mention the PC crowd wont let a casino anywhere near Toronto. Let's make Toronto the tourist centre it once was. Stupid slogans and dumb tv ads wont solve our problems.
The pickle factor - is it just me or are people grumpier and ruder than ever? Not to mention how cold and unhelpful they are. I think people need to dislodge what's up their ass and start socializing again if we want to have the type of city thats worth talking about. |

Crime is not a race thing, that is the silliest thing I've ever heard, if you think most crimes are committed by blacks, or asisans, spanish, italians, your all wrong, cause there are everyday crimes, and then large mountain crimes like corporate fraud, money laundering, that are never done by blacks. These are crimes that you should really care about cause they effect the economy and a bigger part of society than just the guy who robs the local convience store.
Plus what does a WOP have to say about racial crime, like organized crime never exsisted or something? if anything blacks are trying to be mafioso like the true master criminals of this world.;)
Either way, crime is not racially motivated. Sorry, but no one is genetically pre-disposed to be more violent and lawless, thats not how human beings work. Every race has their bad apples and while areas that show a steady incline of immigrants who live in poverty, thats just where you are going to find the crime, people who have less, always want more and find their own means to do it. |

Everyone i know seems to be leaving this city. Mostly they are headed for BC. I think this city is in a terrible crisis. I first started to notice decline in 2000 and its been headed downhill since. At this rate we will be Detroit within 10 years.
Somewhere along the way the Politically correct paradigm of thinking caught up with the real world and we are now reaping the rewards. |
I dunno about that, maybe even longer than just 10 years, cause some cities in the states have more homocides in it than all of Canada does all year round. Some scary ass places in the states. |

jayx most of the things you named here are good, except the casino in the city.
never ever it was a good idea to put one inside a city, its been studied over and over, and it always harmed the city (any city). |

What is this trash I'm hearing about Toronto only having a middle class? This is twisted semantics at best, although I'd prefer to call it completely retarded. Forest Hill is upper class. Jane/Finch is lower class. The only way you can lump these into the middle class category is if you take the word "middle" to mean 3,999,998 people in Toronto, the other 2 being the very richest and very poorest individuals in the city.
The inability to break out of the middle class is a direct consequence of taxes here and it happens all across Canada. Personal and corporate income tax, property tax, tobacco tax, alcohol tax, CPP, EI, gas tax, environmental tax, airport taxes, air conditioning taxes, customs, liquor taxes, capital gains tax, license tax, and probably a hundred other taxes that I just can't think of right now. And that's not even including the "unofficial" taxes like red light cameras and photo radar and parking tickets.
Government spending here is over 40% of our GDP and that's just the federal government. The reason for middle class never reaching upper class has got nothing to do with business or immigration or jobs or any other economic factors, it's purely government. And it's VERY easy to slip from middle class into lower class, all you have to do is not budget your money properly for a few years and find yourself having to declare bankruptcy.
All of this may not affect the amount of crime on ghetto streets but it sure does affect the amount of white-collar crime here. And the people who are committing crimes are finding legal ways to screw other people because they need to recoup their own losses. It's no wonder why nobody trusts each other here anymore, and the atmosphere of distrust is a breeding ground for all other types of crime, whether it's directly responsible for them or not.
It's a vicious circle and not one that this city is going to pull itself out of any time soon. The city can only do so much - many if not most problems are not Toronto's direct responsibility, they are the responsibility of the provincial and federal governments. |

You should see how much the government inhibits the growth of business. I never realized how business unfriendly the government is until i got into one of my own. The taxes are stifling and the city imposes all kinds of pathetic restrictions. We definately do not live in a free market.
On a side note: it was interesting hearing from my buddy in BC how the hells angles now control the shipyards in Victoria and Vancouver and how the RCMP no longer handle security there.
People need to wake up and smell the fact that we are becoming a hidden version of the 3rd world. |

It's funny how most of the time, the accusers of racism turn out to be worse than the accused. |
