Yes, this thread has veered off a bit ... but thats not the point, is it? Beastie Boys and Incubus are irrelevant to these forums because they do not represent the values and interests of these forums as a whole ... |

you said you've converted several friends to trance and house right? well they must have been open-minded enough to give trance a chance. You should be open enough to give mainstream a chance. There's a ton of crap out there from mainstream and underground, but there's also a lot of gems |
Ok, I am gonna tell you some truth about myself then to clear this argument a bit. First of all, I have about 950 rock songs in my music collection, which makes up somewhere around 8 percent of my total music. Mainstream music, overall, makes up about 18.5% percent of it, mainly consisting of 90s rock, rap & hip-hop (about 300 tracks), even some country among other stuff. Back in 1999, I was heavily into mainstream, and I listened to like anything from Eminem to Nine Inch Nails, but that was just an experiment. In time, I learned a few things, and discovered trance, and the fact that electronic music was "oppressed" and limited, often because everybody else was in it for the money, angered me and fueled my deep commitment to electronic music, which I always had. See, mainstream artists often dont give a dam about their fans, I learned it the hard way. Plus mainstream music today often carries a very shady and evil message, like shoot dat byatch or kill dat fag, or do some dope, etc. Its almost like a monopoly, a corporation. Its about people as a whole, not as an individual. Thats why by 2002 I got sick of mainstream music, most part, and I am a proud electronica fan. However, I am very well aware of whats going on in mainstream music today, as in latest tracks by some artists. Mainstream people, however, dont know a sh-t about electronica and they think they have the right opinion, yet often they cant name an artist (other than Moby, who we all know Eminem hates) to bash. |

Yes, I addressed that issue, and then you gave a nonsensical response to the effect of "you messed up, that's not the point, it doesn't represent the interest of the forum" or some bull.
If you can't even write a coherent post then please don't debate the issue. As I've already pointed out, at least threads about mainstream music share some commonality with "the interests of the forum", i.e. music in general. There are several threads that have no relevance whatsoever. If you want to complain, complain about those.
Really what I'm sensing here is that your protesting is fuelled by an irrational hatred of the mainstream. Or perhaps some sense of shame in being part of it, who knows. Either way, there's no logic to any of this. |

Geez... My whole point was that advertisement for mainstream music does not belong on these forums, but I guess thats not what some of you concluded. You dont have to take it so seriously - if you are so seriously into mainstream music, there are places out there on the internet for that kind of stuff. But I guess that contradicts what is actually happening on the forums. What a waste of time. Who cares then. I am tired of complaining.

Dude, the threads get 3 or 4 replies, it's not like they innundate the forum. If they were rampant then that would be one thing but I think there are maybe 3 of them?
And anyway who are you to decide what is and is not appropriate to post here. I'm not taking any of this seriously - not at all - I just think this thread is stupid as hell, you seem to be the one that's taking it needlessly seriously. Just give it a rest, please do close the thread. |

What are you afraid this will lead to? A take over for alternative rock in a trance forum??? Maybe its because you havent been around much lately, but people in these forums are a little bit more open minded about things than you and your one dimensional mindset of musical taste.

Its not mainstream culture that hates electronic music, its the broad majority of people in society. Mainstream culture has excepted electronic music for years, in advertisements even on commercial radio these days.

People in the work place hate it because they choose not to be educated, or are too narrow minded when it comes to EDM. Your average workplace WILL dislike electronic music, but who really gives a ?? Do you want people in your office all going to the same clubs parties as your anyways??

|
Theres actually as much space in the event forum as there is in the TOTA forums pee-wee, it just moves on to page 2, then 3, then 4.

EDIT: I notice your nickname says "Kandi". Does that have anything to do with house music associated with that title? |
So you freak out because two bands concerts you believe dont belong in the event forum, and now you're turning this into a personal ad??? If you even frequent these boards once a month you'd know "Kandi" isnt "out there" as you appear to be.

Post a poll right now, with all the main EDM genres. I bet my life saving trance represents less than half of the votes.

You mean.....i could've saved myself from wasting 35 minutes of my time responsing to all this if i had just read this final post?!?!? Magnetonium - i want the last 35 minutes of my life back, now. If you cant do this, here is your punishment. You must listen to nothing but Incubus and Beastie Boys for a week. The mainstream serum will poison your soul leaving you speechless and twitching, curled up in a ball in the corner of your basement.

I totally agree with this! I wouldn't come here to see non-EDM listings, and don't really want to see them when I come here. Although, does anyone know a good online hiphop listing for Toronto?
As for other non-EDM (& EDM) event listings, see my sig. |

I guess you are all just saying that I am an idiot. That makes more sense. I have been on forums, but I dont have time to reply to everything, cause I am in a lounge, and I pay for every minute online. The terrible thing is, almost every time I post a thread, at the end it ends up getting back at me.
I'll try a different approach to explain myself here. I actually took some time to think about this before making more mess in this thread.
First of all, electronic music was born in a megacity, and it lives there today - club culture began in the 1970s in NYC with Disco. You name a club or a large community of people who like EDM, and it will be in places like Miami, NYC, Toronto, Amsterdam, LA, San Fran, etc. Where do you think all the best clubs are? You guessed it - in urban areas!
Therefore, the with the greater exposure to EDM comes a better understanding of this music, not neccessarily more fans. At least people who hate it, but hear it often have a better idea why they dislike it. In suburban areas (small cities), electronic music not only lacks the exposure, but often lacks its lifeblood - the club. It is very rare to find a decent club for EDM in rural areas - and Hamilton (where I am) is lacking decent clubs, not even talking about decent selection of EDM. Therefore, it may be normal for many people in these areas to hate it, or refusal to try it will be a normal response. If those people, involuntarily get exposed to it, as in hearing some EDM in a passing by car or in a club, or from a friend - chances are high for people getting hooked on this music. Hamilton lacks EDM. If I lived in Toronto, I'd have way more friends through EDM, no doubt - I meet people all the time.
I am tired of the criticism and hatred of electronic music. Imagine playing it, and someone walks up to you and tells you to: "turn that off", "Are you gay or something?", "It all sounds the same, play something else, please", "I cant dance to this crap", "This music is [for] gay", etc. - be it at work, in your car, at school - I'VE EXPERIENCED IT ALL. Some of those people even were close relatives and friends, and they probably think it is OK what they said. So imagine how I feel - being a proud TA, knowing that this is where everybody supports and talks about EDM - a site dedicated to the club culture - now I am seeing EVENT THREADS about mainstream artists like Incubus and Beastie Boys, obviously sticked by moderators. It id like a kick in the teeth, cause the next thing I remember is some who told me that his Beastie Boys are better than your gay techno cause they actually use instruments and have a talent. I feel dissappointed and betrayed.
What's happening here is no different to me than watching 'I AM CANADIAN' commercial on Canadian television, and watching Joe Canadian drink American beer while at it. Wouldn't that hurt? I have nothing against Americans in this case, just an example.
I am not saying that these artists are awful, I have their music, but my point is that's not the last we've seen of them here, very likely. What will be next - Eminem, System Of A Down, Rob Zombie or Slipknot? I wonder if those non-EDM rock forums have event threads for trance music. It's alright if people talk about how much they like any mainstream artist, or ask someone to go moshpit, but sticking events for them is different. Or do we want to have a TA logo on their flyer?
I am proud to be a member of this great site, so supportive of EDM, as I've been ignoring and walking away from mainstream music for years now. Its ironic that what's happening here now is reminiscent of the radio revolution. Take Energy 108 for example. Once upon a time it was a great dance music station, and few years back they played some amazing club music. Then in 1998 they changed to Energy Radio, after they introduced mainstream music to their programming, diluting the quality of their programming, and I havent listened to them since. Hits 103 dot 5 is a similar example - back in the day they mostly played Dance Hits / Club Hits. Few years ago they started adding a lot of mainstream music, like rock, rap, R&B. I guess they changed their name to "Z" to accomodate the fact that its the last letter of the alphabet - last place for music fans. Lately I read about them cancelling Euro music programming, and it's amazing that TENS OF THOUSANDS of people signed a petitiom to support Euro.
As I said before, it would be alright if that mainstream artist expressed interest in having his band promoted on TA, or if they supported TA - why not have their event thread here?
Does this make more sense? |

You actually make less sense now that you've taken the time to "think about" what you're typing. Obviously Hamilton has a rotten club scene. Everything southwest of Toronto is all about top 40 meat markets filled with booze hounds. Do you think a protest against an event forum on a message board is going to help the Hamilton scene?? This has nothing to do with what your're arguing. So why dont you do what all of us who live in this horrid anti-EDM area AND GET YOUR ASS IN TORONTO. |
