How much attention is the RICO suits being paid by the Montreal media?
Its my understanding that the Olympic stadium was just leased out to the Expos for 81 games for next season. And that Bud Selig cant say that the move has been confirmed or else he may be arrested. I would love to see that.
Anyway, I think theres still a 50-50 chance that major league baseball will be back in Montreal next year, with newly rich owners who dont like ing the fans in the ass. |

Read most of the thread, quite frankly i dont think the fact that the team was based in a francophone region is the reason nor quebec's nationalism, cause not so long ago, the olympic stadium was packed, even in the 80's it was packed, early 90's it was packed. Something happened that happens often,we lost interest. A lot of great players left the expos/were traded after the season where there was the lock out. The expos didnt have a season like this since a long time,we were freakin first of the NL,that was a heart breaker for all the expos fans. Dont quite remember the roster, but i remember the team was awesome. From there,it was the downfall. The season after wasnt even close to that.Back in the days when i use to go (when i was interested),the average was easily in the 13 000 if not more (probably more),and we had those famous 5$ days that use to bring a huge crowd, why wouldnt it still work?
one reason would be that the team is brand new,we dont know any of the players on the team, their history, etc.we didnt have time to get "familiarized" with the players and we're a society where only performance counts, and the team kept losing, and the only players who really got known were Vlad Guerrero and Jose Vidro. The rest we didnt care, and besides, the interest wasnt there anymore becuz of the losing habit. Like the new york rangers,is it because hockey is a canadian based game that the team had an horrific season with the players they had,no,and i dont think its the fact that their was too much superstars cuz look at the canadian national team, practically only superstars, but yet we kick ass. So a team that doesnt perform wont attract the crowd too much, and especially because there was a lot of mouvement going on within the rangers. Some might say "yeah new york isnt a hockey town".ok, so who made montreal a baseball town? Besides sport town cant be an argument cuz look at tampa bay in hockey, last place u'd think people would show up to watch hockey, then again they went to the finals and had an awesome season,so yeah expect to have a good crowd.
Another thing linked to my first reason,we didnt have that "go to guy", or lets say spokesperson that everybody respects/love. Felipe Alou was recognized by everyone,we loved him as a coach, losing him was like digging our own grave. Before him,we had "El presidente" Dennis Martinez, awesome pitcher and really a nice guy.So we had some people that we were familiar with, and we had a feeling that the expos were always trying to get a win, baseball was exciting at the time even though on tv it was boring as hell.
Now comes the money probs/probs with the stadium itself. That was also a killer. Its really a great art work and awesome for the olympics, but cant really expect a place like that not to fall on ur head one day, then began the money problems, therefore we had to cut somewhere cuz the goverment couldnt assume all the repair fees, seriously a lot of problem,we should have kept the stadium only for raves hehehe. So yeah player salary suffered, budget of the organization too,not too much support from the government (like the federal gov. with the olympics at athens),so we had to find private investors or else, and well we had hope to save the team. I dont know what the f*ck we go ask an art gallery owner wtv he is jackass Loria to do something with the team...art /sports,still dont see the link except money making. Anyways, all that hope we had, talks about building a stadium downtown had different reactions, yet our goal was to save the team,so we had hope cause there was still some interest. But after there seemed to be no progress made, well we just abandoned the team to its faith, its like a really hot girlfriend that breaks up with you but gives you signs that she wants you back, but then ends up with a Patrick Ewing look alike,u had hope for the girl but king kong just crushed everything, so that calls for depression and frustration, therefore you lose interest in girls in general...for awhile. So not only did the fans lose interest for the team, but for the whole freakin sport.
finally...im sorry but baseball sux,its the only sport you can gain weight while playing,i like american football way more then that. Im not saying its an easy sport to play especially at the mlb level, but doesnt change that its boring, like soccer can be sometimes boring, like a one sided game or two teams that just do crosses/air passes (old english style).A good soccer game is two teams who knows how to move the ball, the ball and players are always in movement. Baseball, well the action is concentrated within a few seconds, and between those action, where there's the long boring break that makes people lose their interest. For example im at home, watching it on tv,i see a baseball, the pitcher's about to throw, throws it,foul ball, then comes the 10 second wait...its boring,im gonna change channel for sure,so im at home and i say to myself "damn its boring",good chance i wont bring my ass to the olympic stadium to go watch a game. |

English Canada has become more American, and Quebec has become more distinct since that time. |
