i heard a set where Sasha is mixing like a ****.

ok, so i didn't, but i heard of it. it's the famous Zen Afterparty from 1996 (?), which in fact is just Sasha spinning for a few people at some dudes house. they had all been up for about 3 days and were pretty messed up. i hear the set got edited in some places before it was made available. supposed to be amazing...

I have heard Digweed balls it up pretty badly down at the Beach club in Brighton.

Trainwrecking the expression refers to the sound that a train would make crashing (Well obviously) i.e. something that is not pleasing to the ear. Random bits of noise with no particular rythm.

And they blamed it on the decks

Bad workman if you ask me

Something worth mentioning is that sometimes there are circumstances outside of DJs control.
I have turned up to clubs sometimes only to find that one of the decks has a pitch problem and it has made me look bad on one or two occassions but no better or worse than anybody else on that night.
Sound system issues are also things that often get blamed on the DJ too. Saw a resident get booed recently because of an amp issue.
Whether or not the boos were actually aimed at the DJ it's hard to tell but there will be those people in the crowd who pick up on this and will boo the DJ even if someone else was booing the sound set up.

When you see a DJ having a bad day it is worth asking yourself if it's the equipment that is playing up.

Bad tune selection is something totally different and I think this is probably the area that should be emphasised more than if they trainwrecked or not. Let's face it, when we say trainwrecked there are very few if any Top names that actually do a full on trainwreck repeatedly unless there is a technical issue like a monitor has gone or something.

When I said Digweed had a bad day, it was not so much trainwrecking and more just not the clinical mixing that he is known for. He had to make a lot of audiable corrections but still kept the flow.

yer. one of my mates did a drum and bass set at an open decks night at southampton uni boiler house. first off he had to mix filthy breaks out of tiesto's addagio for strings. which was amusing. the change in tone was funny but he got away with it. it starts to go wrong here - they had no monitors and the PAs were in front of the decks. you seriously couldnt hear a ing thing. christ knows what the headphones were. they looked and felt cheap anyway. poor bastard was flying blind the whole set. he had a knack for twiddling the bass EQ and using the delay to make drum fills on the djm500 (cuz hes got one of them). the first track came in waaay louder than what he was mixing out of. slap on the forehead number 1. the second tune was coming in and it was on time. nice and tight. the beat came when you slapped the fader across. he slapped it across. it was too quiet. doh. on top of that he was twiddling the bass EQ and the sound was cutting off left right and centre. it was going a bit wrong at this point. the whole set was on time, and key matched. he just couldnt hear anything once it was playing out. all the other djs had similar problems. so a bunch of us sat off to the side and sort of did mock sign language if something sounded horrendous. the look of confusion on his face was priceless. the look of confusion on everyone's faces in the venue was priceless.

What kind of cheap ass promoter hooks up a venue with a DJM-500 and no monitors. I'd refuse to play unless I was getting paid and I needed the cash.

they had a bunch of industry standard gear. 2 techs 1200 mkiis. they were a bit on the old and battered side. but they worked. the djm500 was in pretty good condition. they had 2 pioneer cdj800s. but they looked like they had seen some pretty heavy handed action. not in the best of shape. the lack of monitors was a bit of a joke. but then it was organised by the soton dj society (and they never turned up anyway). overall it was fun though because about 5 or 6 djs did turn up including my friend. started out with psy. a bit of cosma and hallucinogen. the cosma tunes (especially nonstop) were devasting on PAs. then there was a bit of funky house, into trance, into drum and bass, into hardcore. which is quite a nice variety of stuff and a huge change in bpm. nobody really got dancing though. the problem with the boiler house is that its cheesy. run by cheesy jcr students. for cheesy freshers. the one chance some of these peeps got to actually making something decent out of the boiler house by playing some serious music. and they get ed by the dj society. how ironic is that?!

If they were gonna skimp on the monitors they could of at least used a mixer with split cue.

tbh i dont know what happened. the boiler house has potential to be a really good little venue. if it stopped the cheese and brought on the serious tunes. theres enough DJing talent in montefiore halls to make an awesome weekly event at least. but its lazy stuff like the missing monitors and the lack of organisation all round thats really stopping it from happening. i know a few peeps that can and are willing to do a residency there if the organisers will take it seriously. i think some of them are really cracking good as well. it would be shame if it didnt happen.
