| I was in Monte and you are right about that. I think the place is too high or something cos it isnt very intimate. Oh it is good for watching the sport though. When they bother. |

tbh i dont know what happened. the boiler house has potential to be a really good little venue. if it stopped the cheese and brought on the serious tunes. theres enough DJing talent in montefiore halls to make an awesome weekly event at least. but its lazy stuff like the missing monitors and the lack of organisation all round thats really stopping it from happening. i know a few peeps that can and are willing to do a residency there if the organisers will take it seriously. i think some of them are really cracking good as well. it would be shame if it didnt happen. |
do it then
promote it yourself
Hire the venue if needs be |

only if i was english and i knew what you all were talking about
anyways, I hate trainwrecking when your making a demo tape for friends, family or whatever, and you keep trainwrecking and keep having to restart |

| 3 pages and no pictures of a trainwreck?? the DJ booth is more mature than the music discussion... :haha: |

know what you mean. sometimes i produce tracks with one of my friends, dave, aka hobo on soundclick. we've done 2 collaborations so far. anywho, he left one of drum and bass minidisk mixtapes in my dorm and i got curious which one it was. it wasnt labelled but i was hoping it was a 3 way freeform mix we all did before the summer which kind of felt historic enough for a bunch of us to want a recording of it. (last back to back mix we did in our house which topped off an all round pretty amazing year).
whacked it on and my current flat mates decided to stick around for a listen.
first track you hear the needle pop down on the record (yep its a mixtape!). the breakbeats come on at around +8 (yep it must be dave because hes a speedfreak!)then it suddenly stops. track 1 changes to track 2. same tune comes in. (he must have made a mistake). that plays for about 30 seconds and then a scatty mix comes in for all of about 3 seconds before the track starts again. track 3. same song from the start goes on for about 1:30 with the next track cued in around 30 seconds. after 1:15 you can hear it trainwrecking. he doesnt even try to save it. restart. track 4. by this point my flat mates are looking pretty confused and i was like (c'mon dave dont make the next one a trainwreck, i told them you were good!') he whacks it across andy c style for a nice short sharp mix. then he starts trainwrecking the transition into the next track! he left it going though and the whole tape turned out alright in the end with only 1 more noticeable big mistake towards the end. must have had an off day. sometimes you just dont get into the zone and all your mixes go belly up. some days you are really fired up and everything you do seems to be golden. i think with practice you can more consistantly get in the zone. but if you are making a mixtape or playing out this is the best frame of mind to be in. |

lol good story
that reminds me, I was mixing and my brother walked in after getting back from uni, and he said "cool, teach me" and so I taught him for like an hour, hit record and told him to come get me when he was done, i walk back 45 minutes later and the needle on the table is skipping because it is at the end of the record, I walk into his room and hes sitting there staring at the wall saying "what the , I hate mixing". I went back and listened to the tape, and it is the same thing as what happend with each track being a trainwreck. |

hahaha. i feel his pain - i still make mixtapes that are half trainwrecks :eyespop:
when you go back and listen to them you can hear the frustration and desperation of the person on the decks, sadly me in most cases. trying to get half the mixes back on the rails and failing. you can tell the point where i think 'ahhh it' and just wipe the fader across and hope nobody notices.
but they always do.
they always do. :(

i simply >_CANNOT_< record. so far, it has never worked. at first i thought it weas self sabtoage. when i had my first good week, as i call it, a week were i was mixing at least 5 hours per day, and it was beautiful every day, i tried to record it, the second i hit the button, i'd start wrecking like there was no tomorrow. record off. im like wtf, imma practice a bit, warm up. mix for 30 mins flawlessly. record back on, trainwrecking like a bitch. so i gave that up. after that, i had my debut, first time playing out at a house party. no wrecks at all, 2 hour set. i was happy.
weeks later, after yom kippur fast, aka 24 hours no water no food, i started to drink, then ate, then kept drinking. needless to say, i was ed up. go to a party, played the best hour and a half of my life. everyone loved it, including all off my DJ friends. not surgically mixed, but pretty damn good.
tried to record a set ater that, same story again.
a month ago, im at a friends house, decided to have a go on his decks while he was sitting down selecting records for a set he wanted to record. he leaves the room, so he can listen to tracks on a stereo in his living room while im going at it. i am spinning the tiest i have ever spun. i'm talking it felt like the day i had first touched a vinyl.... i leave the decks alone, go outside to the living room, chill with my friend for a while, get a drink. i decide to go at it, again. i try, and fail miserably, not landing a single mix in 45 mins. so i just said, today is not my day. i go out, and say ", i suck today". my friend smiles and says "and you know what, , i just recorded all of that". my mouth drops open, i run into his room, lock him out, while i destroy the recording from his hard drive.
there is something about recording that doesn't go well with me. i hope i can find out what the problem is soon. |
