any preformer is an artist.

even britney spears. dancers are artists therefore she is an artist.

by that standard, DJs are artists too because they preform for others.

You are one twisted dude.
And I agree with you.
Without that 'ransom note' thing.

There is an artform to DJ'ing, and good artists make awesome DJ's ;)

djaying is mainly technical.. for sure you can go into matching the notes of the basslines from track to track

but its not much of an art.. turtablism would be more of an art

definately a producer is an artist.. since they are making hte music

a dj is more of a messanger into which they broadcast the art which is produced by producers

ive been djaying myself for 3 years.. and i dont consider myself an artist with that respect.. i find myself as more of a promoter for the real artists (producers) letting their tracks be heard

so in my opinion.. djs are not artists unless they produce

or if we want to go on the relative scale..

producers are more of artists than djs are

Of course it is an art.

They select tracks and arrange them together to sound a certain way and to create a flow, they also adjust tracks like Gamma said. A DJ's set as a whole is definitly a "piece" of art.

i would have to disagree here

i think this is the main reason why canada lacks so man electronic producers in general (generally house trance and prog im talking about here)

the mentality that djaying is enough and leave it at that.. is definately wrong..

an attempt to at least contribute to the pool of music should be sought after by aspiring electronic musiciians

otherwise all you are really doing is just playing other peopls songs

unless your layering tracks back and forth.. using 3 turntables (like bad boy bill[even he produces]) you are just a messanger or a promoter for the real artists who make the music.

lets face it.. i dont know many djs who take hours and hours to plan their sets have every track exactly on cue to the beat, harmonically matched etc etc.. to create a masterpiece.. most djs just mix when it feels right.. towards the end of the song.. or perhaps in the middle if the song permits..

i find it as more of a profession than an art

i might be a bit critical.. im not bashing djs in general.. but im just saying that i dont consider them artists really.. or at least not to the level of the producers

anyone can be an artist if they consider themselves to be .. who are we to judge ?

True Emz. However I think an artist is someone who creates...
Now if they create something new with something that is arleady there (ie other songs etc) then that's fine, or if they produce new tracks entirely obviously that's artistry in the works.

A painter doesn't produce the paint he uses.. a musician doesn't build the instrument he plays..

Yes but a musician or painter creates with the tools that they are given. Hence creativity = being an artist. Imo.

Likewise a dj creates with the records he has and the tools (ie mixer) he uses.

A DJ is an artist in that he produces something that pleases your senses, that's a very general def. You could say, well play one good track and that will please your senses yes.

But you could also make a machine to spray paint on a sheet and it would look pretty damn cool, just like art. And would you call the person who built that machine an artist?? Also, you can program a simple computer algorithm to make a pretty funky design, but would you call the programmer an artist? No, because there is no human creativity in it, like EndlessWave said, I agree.

There is much human creativity in certain dj productions. The people on this board have a good taste of which dj's are true artists, and which ones are the programmer and the machine builder as in my example above.
