so if the person who designed the machine designed it to create a work of art or several works of art

he/she would be an artist/producer

just like recording a song..

True, visual art requires alot less 'proficiency' from the artist to be considered good than music. Pop culture pokes fun at this all the time.

What I was trying to do was derive a definition: an artist is someone who creatively produces something to please your senses. I think most people would agree a 'good' DJ (Armin ya!) satisfies this definition.

Which reminds me.... if an art becomes pop culture, does it lose its potential as an art work?
Endlesswave
A lot of people seem to think so but I would say in some cases it would, in others it doesn't. I mean look at the Mona Lisa, it's in pop culture, people reference it all the time. Does it cease to become art? No.

Here's something to question: Do you consider a photographer to be an artist??

If so, alot of the arguments in this thread saying that a dj is not an artist also applies here.

After all, the photographer doesn't produce what he captures, he presents it in an artistic way, exactly like a dj would present the tracks he uses in an artistic way!

Their is an ART to DJing, but I would have to say DJ'ers are more Arrangers. We are the gallery that the Musician's show their work in. and if the gallery is a box or the paintings are crap, well then noone will go see.

alot of very good points

i agree iwth you jdjd.. that example of the photographer really clarifies your perspective

but i think that djs these days especially in canada.. prefer to stop at an early stage and not pursue producing

i think its a logical step for djs to take

they are submerged into the music.. why not contribute to it?
