Are DJs Artists? (pg. 3)

emery is right.. who are we to judge

art is art

but when you see djs that play at clubs every weekend top 40 or what not spinning the same sets over and over again.. it makes you wonder whether they are considered artists

they have no intrest to produce as well

usually an artist is always challenging themselves trying new things.. and experimenting

when it comes to electronic music.. there is no better experimentation than at the source of the track itself

wouldnt that be the goal of a thriving artist/dj

saying a mixed set is not art, and the DJ is not an artist, is like saying a collage is not a piece of art. or that an arrangement of flowers is not art, since those 2 artforms involve only the arrangement of existing things. wow... those are really crappy examples.. hahah...

yes... some collages are crappy, artless pieces thrown together without artistic considerations (like a scrapbook or something...) but i think that creating art from existing art can work...

as long as something is created with art in mind, it's art, regardless of the medium.

in the case of the DJ, the medium is music. even though the DJ does not compose the song (but often they DO, so you might consider DJing as an extension of his/her production abilities...) they can arrange the tracks and mix them in a way that makes you hear each track in a different way than when it is played alone. as cliche as it sounds, the mixed set becomes more than the sum of its parts.

define art and artist first then i think it will be easier to answer the question

even britney spears. dancers are artists therefore she is an artist.

by that standard, DJs are artists too because they preform for others.

very true i guess.. if karate, dancing and accounting are all arts i guess djing is as well. I just don't find it a very interesting one.

The real talent in music is the music itself. Music creation is where the real art form is. However, almost all djs are producers themselves to their credit.

It's a very open ended question.

Art is in the eye of the beholder.

But you could also make a machine to spray paint on a sheet and it would look pretty damn cool, just like art. And would you call the person who built that machine an artist?? Also, you can program a simple computer algorithm to make a pretty funky design, but would you call the programmer an artist? No, because there is no human creativity in it, like EndlessWave said, I agree.

very intresting analogy.. but music does take creativity.. and not randomness

so if the person who designed the machine designed it to create a work of art or several works of art

he/she would be an artist/producer

just like recording a song..

and when you look at the best of the best djs.. yes some are better than others.. all of them produce.. so its an ethical argument to say that a producer is more of an artist than a dj... or a more accomplished artist

I have a different one. Saying dj mix is an art is like saying an art display or a fasion show itself are arts. All djs really do is put works of art on display.

True but it's HOW they put that "art" on display that determines if they are really an artist or just someone who is throwing something together randomly. It's a fine line I think...

if the paintings are arranged in a way that is aesthetically pleasing (as opposed to just hanging them up haphazardly all over the gallery) then art is involved. if the models are just sent out on the runway in any order, wearing clothing chosen at rondom, then its not art. i'm not some kind of fashion expert, but i'm pretty sure clothing is matched to the model and they are sent out in some kind of order... art.

if a dj just picks a bunch of random songs, and mixes them poorly, then the artistic value of the set could be questioned... but if the DJ puts careful consideration in track selection and mixing, then its art in my books.
