Is Anti - American sentiment "trendy" these days?

This whole situation is ed.
I'm not even from the US and it angers me how many people participate in this surging Anti-american sentiment.
It seems to be such a trend nowadays to comment on how ed Americans are based on their hatred of Bush, his war-mongering demeanour and whatever else they've seen on the internet. It is coming to a point where people are stereotyping an entire nation based on a leader they didn't even elect. Its like hating all germans because of the nazi campaign, it makes no ing sense.
Can people not see that American is not some unified being, but as the rest of the world; constituted of people with differing values, opinions and beliefs?
What angers me the most is peoples attitudes on the soldiers on iraq. The abu gharib prison scenes where gruesome and inhumane, but why is it we all suddenly think the entire defense force over there is exactly like that? The situation is similiar to vietnam in a way. The soldiers were sent overseas under false pretences and were put there to do a job they had no say in. They have been put in harms way for basically no reason at all and people are degrading and codemning the soldiers? Thats cowardice and exactly what we DON'T need in the war.
In a thread in the cool sites/humour section of TA there was a video of american troops in action and various shots of injured/killed citizens/iraqi troops/american troops. I could't believe it when people in the thread were saying things like "i feel sorry for the innocents killed, but not the US troops". Of course these were Ta's from outside the US. I mean ing come on, their still people too. How would you feel if a brother/sister/uncle/aunty was shot? - im sure you'd be just as nonchalant right?
Hate the government if you are to guide your anger somewhere. |

| No we're actually all redneck hicks that enjoy bashing gays and shoving our ideas down other people's throats. Hey, we're Americans, it's what we do, and we're damn proud of it. |

I agree. ;)
As a hater of all things trendy, I must also denounce this current anti-American, anti-Bush sentiment. People have their reasons, yes, but it seems like now, more than ever, people are somehow concerned with all the evil dealings of the US. Truth is, the country didn't all of a sudden change once Bush was elected into office, it's been doing the sort of it does for YEARS. Now though, there's extensive media coverage! Ooh! War on Iraq...now on CNN! It becomes more and more obvious that wars will not be fought on the sand anymore, but rather, through the little box in your living room that displays pixels in a certain manner. This isn't war - this is a ing media field-day, as has become the way of the "world" for the last few decades.
You think this war and this leadership is something new? It's not, so don't think you're all of a sudden something special because you can effectively insult the President of the US; it's pretty goddamn useless, and the charade for your concern is so easily seen through, your petty cleverness is more of a ing joke than proof that you care. I find the anti-american jokes to be quite funny most of the time - not because the joke, itself, is funny, but because I know the person making the joke is either regurgitating what somebody else once said or doesn't really have an informed clue as to waht they're talking about.
Since the word 'American' was mentioned on this thread, let the flaming begin. :gsmile: |

| I wouldnīt call it a trend. Itīs a very common opinion based on recient events. The u.s. is doing stupid things, therefor they will be bashed. |

Yes, it is.
In fact many kids in my school are claiming to be "anti flag"
When discussing the american election, they were all bashing bush and stuff, and then saying how kerry is stupid and stuff, i asked what they thought of ralph nader, and they all said that they had never heard of him.
A few minutes later they ended up calling me a
"ing moron"
because,
"i should be ing smart enough to know that america has a commy style government that only lets you choose out of 2 peeps, theres no third guy"
I find it hard to beleive it when people say our country has a better education system than america, on the otherhand, most american students probably cant name our prime minister. |

This is true, but to play devils advocate, they probobly can name the leaders of most other major nations (England, Germany, Russia, etc.)
Not to say that Canada isn't important (it is our major trading partner), but as far as world-political pull goes... they don't seem to have very much. |

| Exactly, bashing a country has become sort of a way for people to bond with one another rather than actually discuss something truly worthwhile. It's like some sort of musical taste where people only join in because they have no other recourse for feeling as though they belong somewhere, so they team-up with people who have (somewhat) arbitrarily decided to denounce an element of this world. Whether this element is jews, black people, nerds, mexicans, girls, toe fungus, or the United States of America, these people don't really have a worthwhile reason to insult; they just do it because it helps them feel better. |

| Im not going to necessarily say that I support what my country is doing, but I have to say that the US is getting A LOT more heat than they should. Who says there werent weapons of mass destruction? The media is full of dumbasses, an example being that we PUBLICLY announced to the WORLD that we were going to Iraq to look for nuclear weapons. Well, that gave ample time for them to move them to Syria before we even got there. Im not saying there were, but the US's actions arent completely dumbfounded, and I know you all sleep better knowing that Saddam is no longer in power. |

Haha, dont worry about offending me, i know our country isnt very important at all from a global point of view.
There was this show that used to be on called "Talking with Americans" And the guy used to go down to the states and convince people to beleive crazy fabricated canadian current events. Then they would say things to the camera along the lines of "Congrats Canada, on giving women the right to vote" |

I think its natural. I don't think its a trend, if its is its a very long lived trend. There has been a pervasive sense of anti american sentiment globally for a long time now. Its human nature, everyone loves to hate whomever or whatever is on top. Yeah America has done some stupid lately but so has everyone else and its not anything new, its called real life. We don't live in a nice world with fairy dust and lollipops growing out of the ground. If someone wants to be ignorant and stereotype all Americans and bash on us just because half our population elected an idiot to run our country than so be it. I don't think thats the real reason though but its a nice scapegoat.
I think we can invoke wizard's first rule here to pretty much explain things, (i.e. people are stupid and easily controlled) yep that sums it up. |
