playing with the pitch-levels of the samples tends to help things 'match' eachother better.
even if you think the drums and the bassline allready sound good together, just try the different pitch levels, it might get even better :)
(or is this a well known 'trick' :D) |

| if you are doing complex breaks or perc patterns you have to tune them so they sound right. its also a good way of getting rid of clashing frequencies and phasing sounds by altering the pitch which changes the frequency range that instrument occupies. |

| I find that even though the percussion isn't played(sequenced) in any key it still adds to the melody |

| percs do have a key. you have to tune drums. just listen to higher sense - cold fresh air (its jungle though) all the percs in that, particularly the kicks and snares have a very prominant tuning that change throughout the song as if played on a piano roll. actually quite alot of jungle is like, a symphony of drum samples. omni trio - renegade snares shows you hat you can do with tuning drums differently too. as the above post says, absolute requirement for things like tablas, bongos, toms etc. its just more noticeable when one of those is out of tune than say, a closed hihat. |

Absolutely! I'm currently having the same problem and just haven't been able to get around it yet. I greatly envy Mr. Mystery for his ability to make drum loops so easily. I have a devil of a time with them. =/
Also, thank you very much Mr. Mystery for making this tutorial! I assure you that it will definitely help me... if I could just find the right percussion sounds to begin with. :P |
