What happened to The Guvernment

I admit that I'm still fairly green to this whole rave/dance party scene. I started this journey back in 2001 after a trip to Ibiza. So naturally upon my return I started going to guv and kewlhaus events.
At the time the crowds in either section were always great. People just there having an awesome time, dancing, chatting, meeting new friends, and the vibe was just so fun. You hardly ever got slammed from your position so some big shirtless sweaty gorilla could get over and "molest" some hottie dancing on the other side of the club.
The last few months at guv I've started noticing a change in the clientelle. The crowd is getting much rougher and way pushy. I've got no problem with somebody trying to get past me, but what ever happened to that friendly tap on the shoulder letting you know somebody was coming through.
Last night at the Oakenfold show, was quite possibly my worst ever experience at Guv. Yes the music was fantastic, but the crowd was absolutely incredible - and not in the good-back-in-the-day sense. I'm a fairly big guy and can usually hold my own, but last night i was ragdolled constantly. Guys and gals all just shoving people out of the way to make room for themselves. The place is rammed to the rafters, what makes you think your dancing neighbour will appreciate your wild arm flapping, and leg kicking? Or you'll be able to cross the floor in record time?
I'm afraid to admit this but I fear my love affair with guv is very quickly drying up. And it's not due to the talent brought in. It's from the crowd, you can tell the regulars, and TA's cuz they still politlely move through a crowd and are quick to offer a smile. But the newbies are absolutely dreadful and should have stayed in their previous club of choice.
And one other observation, and btw I am a smoker. If you think you don't need any type of deodorant or cologne or a shower think again. Man ever since they introduced that no smoking by-law, I have come across some party goers that are downright toxic! (the smoke covered a lot of these foul smells) And when you are jammed on the dance floor, packed in tighter than canned sardines, it can sometimes literally take your breath away. It's just common sense, you're going out for a night of dancing and partying, just follow some good basic hygiene routines, like showering and deodorizing beforehand. It's somewhat understandable at 6 or 7 in the morning, but not at 1130pm. |

I'm surprised you just noticed this.
I've watched the crowd there go downhill since I started partying at the end of 2002. From what I hear, it's been a steady downhill trip since the rave scene got wiped out in '99/2000.
It doesn't help the way the club staff treats patrons either - drives away most of the "savoury" characters so all you see are the "unsavoury" ones. |

| the only way to ever have a really decent time there is to go on an all access event. that way at least you have room to move around and get past people, and dont have to worry about idiots as much. if its just in the guv, your screwed totally. dont even have room to dance, pretty much just bobbing the head to the beats, and like you said, people will push you out of the way to get past. all access or a no go i say |

Yeah, that was the premise I operated on until that fateful night with Liebing/Gaetano/Picotto when they decided to cut costs by turning an all-access event into a single-room event at the last minute without telling anyone. I know techno is a hard sell in Toronto and can certainly understand their frustration over low ticket sales, but this goes back to what I said earlier about the way the staff treats the customers. For me, that was the last straw. I'm sure that many others here also have "last straw" stories. |

| yeah i know what you mean about the staff. we dont pay to be pushed around by s on a power trip, being total dicks. we got for the music, to have a good time, to dance. sure theres some people that get out of line, but for the most part alot of people are good. they need to have a talk with their staff to smarten up. most clubs, your left alone on your business, they treat you with respect if you treat them with respect. maybe thats the key they should get in there heads, have respect. |

| i've never really be in a situation where the club has changed the event just boom like that, and into one room, i'd be pissed. i've only had beef with the bouncers and such there sometimes. i dunno, theres some stuff guv has to work out to make it a really great place to go to again. the bouncers, the way they pack in sometimes, audio messing up. i'm sure theres more. dont they have meetings every week to go over ways to make the club better. if you keep improving on things, and i dont just mean adding money to stuff, maybe the way things are set up, doesnt that make a better club? just a thought guv staff |

Why improve things when it's already jam-packed every Saturday night?
It's all about the bottom line... doesn't matter what the crowd is as long as it fills the place. |

| its a business, and if you never improve things, and other clubs do, would your club not eventually start losing people that go to it? they have a system in place that works, but when people start to bitch alot about how crowded it is and stuff, and they dont act on it, eventually it backfires. |

| I hear ya, jagr89. We've all been noticing this for quite a while now. I don't see it getting any better in the guv main room. At least KH isn't that bad during the all access events. That's prolly the only reason I still attend them. |
