i got tired of reading about half way through cause everyone was kinda saying the same thing, so i'll join you all and say the same stuff again...
around here people dont know who scooter is. its all about sandstorm and DJ sammy's "heaven"
even then they dont know what trance is. its all techno to them. in one of my classes, people will be like, "hey zill(teachers nickname), put on some techno." then he'll put on some trance control CD i gave him two years ago or something. i provide that guy with live sets over and over and i always tell him and everybody that its trance, not techno, but i always get about it, and they continually call it techno.
they make fun of me for my music preference, and sadly enough, i cant make them aware of their ignorance, cause they dont think i have any idea what im talkin about....

EDIT: ******s:whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip:
ok im good :p |
Your friends won't know what techno is unless you actually play em some techno.. Whoop out the classic detroit ... like Cybotron, Jeff Mills, Sean Deason, Derrick May, ect
Then play em the new techno... like (some) Mauro Picotto, Joy Kitikonti, Adam Beyer, Max Walder, Henrik B, Timo Benz ect
They won't know what techno is unless you play em real techno.. Stop playing them trance.. They seem to have already gotten a grasp of it. It's time to show them the difference. If they want techno, give em techno. |

No, I don't think real trance must have acid. True a lot of it does (did), but a fair amound were nice without it as well. Cosmic Baby, Visions Of Shiva, some Resistance D stuff, some Spicelab stuff, some stuff Stevie Be-Zet did, I believe Castle Trancelott had some nice classics without acid, early Sun Electric stuff....there was good non-acid trance as well.
I guess most/all used the TB-303...but it wasn't all ACID TRANCE. And as I said there were some good tracks that had no acid in them... |
True, and what's entrancing to one person, may not be entrancing to another.
So we're arguing what codifies trance? Trance is a bit too old and too broad to say that only "acidlines" can make a tune trance. Just like back then, trance is still an ambiguous genre today.
Acid house, acid techno, acid breaks, acid whatever uses acid lines, but it's still not necesarily trance music, nor claims to be. So right off the bat, we know that just because your music has an acidline doesn't make it trance.
Over the years, trance has tried to codify itself by using a buildup-breakdown anthem formula, but not every trance addict bought that since it was a pop gimmick.
In conclusion, trance music is based on pure claim and credibility. The artist has to make their audience believe he or she is a trance artist. It's about who's playing, not so much about the music they're playing. Obviously, the only rule to the music being "trance" is that it has to be electronic dance music, if not, it's not anywhere near it. (unless you've seen a southern rock band claim to be trance, then try to prove me wrong).
Okay so let's play the "who's trance" game.
Is Scooter trance?
NO. Scooter doesn't even claim to be trance, and although they claim to be techno, Juan Atkins (one of the founding fathers of techno) states that the music has to be "cold, mechanical, and sound like technology" which Scooter sounds nothing like. So wtf are they? I have no clue. You answer that. By the way, stealing riffs from trance classics and slapping them on your song doesn't make you trance. Just like sampling from a disco song and putting it on your rap tune, doesn't make you a disco rapper. The day Scooter claims to be trance and can get an overwhelming majority of tranceaddicts to believe they're trance, then there's nothing stopping them from being trance, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
Is Armin trance?
YES. Whether you agree with this or not, Armin claims to be a trance artist and has a fanbase which agrees that he is a trance artist, therefore he is a trance artist because trance is based on EDM and pure credibility.
Are DJ Sammy's eurodance hits trance?
NO. He never intended them to be trance, although most of the remixes are done by "trance" artists (like Pulser and Green Court). So those remixes are trance based on claim and credibility.
Is Darude trance?
YES. Once again, he made the claim and backed it up with credibility by most trance fans
Wanna know the best way to find out who's trance?
Post up a poll of questionable people who claim to be trance artists or whom the masses claim are trance artists. You should get accurate results, since this forum does represent a good majority of trance addicts from all walks of life (from the jaded prog-heads to the teenie boppers). |

Not to piss everybody off, but don't you think it is a little narrow minded to think that all techno/trance/cheese/whatever people know is DJ Sammy or Sandstorm?
It is not true that cheese is bad music, it is just not what you like to listen to. Get over it.
At least some of my friends were open to 'real' trance, and they honestly told me it was just too boring for them to listen to. They like the cheese though, because those tracks only last about 3 or 4 minutes or so, and contain a lot more elements to keep a song interesting.
Don't just flame everybody because they like cheese. If you take the time to explain, I think a lot more people will understand the difference between cheese and trance.
I don't like cheese either, although some artists have clearly put a lot of effort into their music. And why do you tink their is so much cheese being released? Because people like it.
When i'm referring to 'cheese', i'm talking about music, not food.
With that said: flame on. |

Trance is kinda an offensive word to call a genre anyway. Making a sepearate genre called trance kinda implies that other music is not entrancing. I imagine this pisses off many producers who have made hypnotic music that has gotten classified into other genres.
Many musicians from non-trance genres have made repetitions for the purpose of creating a trance-like mindstate in the listeners. For example, most of us here have read those quotes from the kraftwerk interviews about making entrancing repititions, but nobody calls kraftwerk trance. Perhaps different musicians would have much more support if this trance genre had not separated itself from the rest of EDM. I imagine many people who like to be entranced would support alot of different musicians that aren't called trance if there wasn't already a seperate trance genre.
This is why I like using the "trance is a state of mind" idea. |

"They are great, omg i love trance. I like scooter's trance it is magnifo.
lol, i just laughed. |

Yeah, they like the cheese because they've heard the "radio edits" of the cheese which are about 3 or 4 minutes, but if they hear the club mixes of those songs, they'll see that they have a lot LESS elements in the long amount of time the songs are in... listen to some of the long club mixes of Ian van Dahl, Lasgo, Sylver, DJ Sammy, ect and compare them to the long club mixes of "real" trance. You'll hear that the "real" trance has a lot more going on, and is far more interesting in the amount of time it's in.
If you want your radio friend to be instersted in "real" trance, get him radio edits or other short versions (possibly set rips) of those songs you like. |

This is why this doesn't make any sense. I guess Rock should be an offensive word because it implies that all other music isn't solid. Jungle is an offensive word because it implies that its music is lower than anything else, that it comes from the jungle o_0. Hiphop shouldn't be called hiphop because that implies that all other music isn't cool or hip.
In reality, trance IS a state of mind, but trance music ISN'T a state of mind. It's a real genre. If it's not entrancing to you, then don't listen to it. If hiphop isn't hip to you, then don't listen to it. If rock isn't rock-solid enough for you, then don't listen to it.
It CAN'T piss off ANY producer for being classified into another genre because like I said before the only thing we all can agree on is that trance music is based on the artist's claim and the fans' credibility.
Kraftwerk NEVER claimed to be trance. They may have claimed to be electro or claimed to be computer music. They never even claimed to be techno, when Juan Atkins says they are because without Kraftwerk, there'd be no trance or no techno. YES, they predated trance, but they never claimed to be, and the majority of their fans don't classify them as trance, whether they are entrancing or not. You're talking about 2 different kinds of trance. Trance the genre has nothing to do with trance the state of mind. Just like rock, the solid object has nothing to do with rock the music. Yes, there are musics that make me want to throw rocks at things, but that doesn't make them rock music. |
|
|
| Ory |
| wtf. :wtf: Rock doesn't refer to a ing stone. Do you even know why the genre was named that? |
|
|
| gerrycueto |
of course it doesn't!
It was just a statement that proves that trance the genre is only a state of mind is false. The 2 are totally unrelated.
It looks like you have no sense of humour. |

i dont listen to the word trance. i dont think anyone else does. its all about the music you like. maybe the genre was named trance cuz it was actually entrancing but i think now its just a name.

let me ive you an example that this is wrong.
when pvd came to greece in september the flyer said: pvd the #2 progressive and techno dj blah blah blah. tiesto... the same #1 techno dj.
because most ppl in greece think that trance is only psy and eurodance. the club owners and stuff dont say trance. its a bad word here lol. so i think that every producer is classified by what he claims to be and what ppl that KNOW MUSIC think.
my 2 cents |
