They are predicting the death toll to rise substantially with the onset of disease. I think if everyone can fork over money for a club, it shouldn't be to hard to make a donation to the Canadian Red Cross (www.redcross.ca)
I can't begin to imagine their reality right now and what's to come in the coming weeks. |

My prayers go out to everyone touched by this horrible disaster. :(
I was just watching the news brief on the TV and apparently there are 3 Canadians among the thousands that have died.. |

Made a donation earlier today, this has really hit me, we are so luckly to live where we do. I can't really put it into words, I'm just in shock at the magnitude of destruction/death. Sure, 24000 people are reported dead now, but that number is only going up, and will go up quite a bit. How about the other millions of people in those regions who made it so far, life isn't back to normal, the destruction, unimaginable.
Some stats I found about the tsunami and the quake.
Travels around 500KM/h+ from the epicenter of the quake, slowing as it reaches shore down to ~45km/h at the shore, rising upto ~20ft. It's not just the same kind of wave you see at the beach generated by wind either.
Tsunamis are unlike wind-generated waves on a lake or at a beach. They are characterised as shallow-water waves, with long periods and wave lengths. The wind-generated swell at a beach spawned by a storm in the sea and rolling in, one wave after another, might have a period of about 10 seconds and a wave length of 150 m. A tsunami can have a wavelength in excess of 100 km and period of one hour.
A 9.0 quake releases the equivalent energy of 32 billion tons of TNT, or more than 2 million times the force of the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
The quake itself affected the Earths normal rotation. |

| I agree with you Kevin. It has really hit me hard too. Here I am playing video games and surfing TA, meanwhile at the other side of the world tens of thousands of people have died for no apparent reason. This a nearly if not totally unpreventable disaster. |
