Want to know what I call professional? Fatboy Slim, on a weeknight, playing on a broken turnable that skipped every 2 minutes and still putting on about 2 hours of solid performance, and NEVER getting angry or shoving the DJ equipment around (as I've seen MANY DJs do - I won't mention any names but you all know who they are).

Armin falls under this category....Everybody remembers the sound system fiasco at Guv 8th anniv nite when Armin graced the decks....And how him & max graham worked it out instead of bringing the proceedings to a halt...Not for a single sec did that smile of his go away....
Also a Good DJ doesn't experiment too much....Cuz that can lead to playing tracks which may or maynot suit his set and result in trainwrecks.... |

Producing makes a better DJ?
I have a problem with this. I can think of a million examples of really good producers who can't DJ worth . The only reason they are DJing is to make money since producing records doesnt pay. (especially now with downloading). Many producers take a crash course in DJing in order to promoter their name and sell albums. Sure there are some DJs who are good producers but in most of these cases the producing came AFTER the Djing. A good DJ loves his craft and isn't in it to promote some record that he just made.
I'm personally neither a DJ nor a producer but I challenge anybody who says that I don't understand the music. |

A good DJ DOES experiment. The only way to improve and change your sound is to experiment. Imagine if the first dj who tried to beatmatch way back when thought this way. Where would we be today? |

Not to take away from djs who dont produce, its just that production is a huge factor, probably the highest ranking factor promoters take into consideration when booking the main talent .
|
No - the number of people a DJ's name will bring in is usually the highest ranking factor. Booking agents want their club full, whether people are dancing to a DJ's own tracks or someone else's. |

I was on stage right behind watching them trying to fix the problem & you're right...They both kept their cool to fix the problem. |

I think producing can make you a better DJ, whether you are playing your productions or not. It all speaks to a better understanding of the music.
However, there are many excellent DJs out there who are not producers. I think the fault lies in your wording, Yoshi - producing improves ones understanding of the music, therefore making them a better DJ, but that doesn't mean they weren't excellent to begin with. |
Totally agree with this. You don't have to be an amazing producer with a ton of releases under your belt to be a good DJ. However, in my own experience, production does give you a better understanding of music as a whole. This in turn helps you as a DJ. However, producing is not what I would consider to be a requirement to be a good, or great DJ. |

as already mentioned here i love it when a dj interacts with the crowd. to me that is a must and is something i strive to do better and better each time i play... which is something that has come with being more and more comfortable playing in front of people.
i hate djs that just stand there and mix a record every 6, 8 minutes or whatever. play a track, mix out, play a track, mix out. no layering, nothing. it's boring. sure if it's a great track and deserves to be played on it's own then fine but for the most part. it's boring!! so in other words... active djs kick ass. oh and it also goes into interacting with the crowd, reading the vibe or setting the mood for people to dance among other things.
playing music on big systems for people is fun why turn it into something boring? |

It depends. If a Dj jumping around and being an idiot takes away from the music aspect of the show then i dont like it. Id rather have a dj "just stand there" and deliver the goods then jump around like a clown. Remember that DJs are there to be heard and NOT SEEN. I'm there for the music. If i want a show i'll go to the theatre. |

All things aside that have previously been talked about...the one thing that is such a huge importance;
Stage presence.
You can't tell me that watching a DJ sit in the shadows doing nothing at all is as exciting and interesting as watching Armin, Ferry, Tiesto, etc. jumping around, interacting with the crowd.
I love it, and it's important.
Of course you have to do smooth and exciting mixes, builds and letdowns, crowd reading, etc. But that stage presence is what makes a GREAT DJ over just a good one (IMO)
