| its one thing to over exaggerate the techniques that you are using such as making a face when you drop the bass in. But its another to go off and start roller blading through the crowd, doing the running man, or performing magic tricks. But again from my experience the ones who concentrate on what they are doing are truely the better dj because they dont blow up the sound system. |

I agree. I hate DJs that put all their levels WAY up and thus, the sound comes through the speakers all distorted and soundins like crap. Why would you want your music to not be heard properly? it blows my mind.
I also agree with your point about the DJ being busy adjusting, testing sounds and whatnot on the fly. Which is what I mean when I say an "active" DJ.
Most of it comes down to personal preference but it really makes me angry when I hear about DJs getting paid tons of $$$ that can't DJ (in my opinion) for . |

so good DJ = someone that doesn't make Jay do any work.
I am not following this argument anymore...sheesh. |

Exactly... because a good dj doesnt blow up a sound system. Personally i like getting extra hours so its all good when the ones roll through town. |

A good point about DJs who crank up the volume too much, that's one of my pet peeves too. Boa's soundsystem is a great test for this - you can spot an amateurish DJ a mile away when you start hearing distortion. Funny how that most often seems to come from trance DJs...
DJs and clubs invest so much money in high-tech headphones, but what they really should be doing is using ty headphones, because those are a much more reliable indicator of what it sounds like outside of the DJ booth. Distortion in the headphones means distortion in the speakers, and DJs would know when they're going overboard.
Then again, that would just absolve them from having to do a proper soundcheck, which makes it harder for us to spot the DJs who suck. :D |

yep i agree that this is a huge problem with trance djs in general
its primarily due to the reason that trance has alot of higher frequencies than most other genres. more layers and is more congested.
It thus is more easily distorted
a good dj will know when they've gone overboard with the soundsystem |

Trance doesn't have any more high frequencies than other types of dance music unless the eq'ing is horrible. Drum 'n' bass is going to have the highest concentration of sound in the upper frequency band, with techno coming in second - and DJs of those genres seem to have no trouble.
I really think it's just that there's a saturation of trance DJs out there, and a lot of them suck, and their audiences don't realize it for reasons I won't get into right now. |

| I think skill comes first (obvious reasons), reading the crowd and diversity. The more ppl you touch with your music, the better. |

wel yes i guesss those hi hats really hit the hi freq..
congested synth layers are more liable to distort though rather than different levels of percussion
djs like ferry corsten need an extremely good hi quality sound system in order to play their music otherwise it distorts very very easily.. either that or they need to be right on the money with their eq'ing and keep the hi's low |
