he produces and he does reworks for tracks, if you read the quote Yoshiesque posted.
Its a given if djs can produce well that they are well knowledged in the music.. its not like their pulling songs out of their ass. OBVIOUSLY they are influenced by other genres and styles.
Just because one produces doesnt make them an arrogant attention whoring artist.. in fact it gives their personality as an artist more depth due to the fact that they can absorb the music and apply it with their own twist to it.
the reason why preach is a good dj relates to his producing skills. hence the reason why he is known world wide.

if anything they should defend your point i guess :D, i guess in the world of pop no one really cares if artists make their music or not.. or may be disillusioned into thinking that they do.
to sum up, technicality wise, producing doesnt make a big difference, but overall impression of a dj.. its a huge difference if you ask me.
its inevitable that 90% of good djs will go on to pursue producing. And i think that percentage is even lacking. |

| How about this one? If the DJ is doing his job properly he doesnt have time to be running about doing god knows what else. The DJ is there to mix but he also has to adjust levels constantly. Also if hes on 3 or is a tweaker hes there all the time. OK fine, make an expression when you kick in a beat (like Junkie XL likes to do for example) but other than that there shouldnt be any theatrics. |

This goes to show you don't really know what is involved being a DJ.
Some DJs are quicker and better at mixing, tweaking, and MULTI-TASKING.
An interactive DJ isn't a bad DJ. |

i beg to differ considering ive watched the best from the best position possible. I know what i like and what i dont and the best ones are usually busy adjusting, sorting or testing out different sounds on the fly. |

a dj that plays music that I like. i like djs that play more than 'one sound' (djs that are versatile). a dj that isnt afraid to experiemt with new music, accapellas, mixing etc...a dj that plays GOOD NEW music that I havent heard a million times before. not just big tune after big tune, that gets old very fast.
its nice to see a dj having fun behind the decks, jumping around and dancing or whatever...but at the end of the day seeing someone do that isnt really going to make me like him less/more...the music they play makes the biggest impression and that far outweighs anything else they do. |

but you're trying to extrapolate your personal taste in DJs into saying that unless everyone does what they do, they are a bad DJ.
Like "Richie is my favorite DJ, and he doesn't interact with the crowd, he's busy working, which is why I think he's good, therefore to be a good DJ you have to be like richie and do what he does." |

Nooooo im saying that the best DJs are usually too busy working to be pulling off theatrics. Look at Danny Tenaglia even. Hes great but when he's off roller skating through the crowd his technical skills suffer emmensly at that particular moment. He will let a track play out forever and sometimes not even beatmatch when he's off doing stuff like that. Usually DT is great but im not a fan of the theatrical stuff. DJs are hired to play music.
For the record as well i can tell you that the DJs that are the ones jumping around and making a show of themselves instead of adjusting and fine tuning levels have traditionally been the ones who blow the system and give guys like me extra hours for replacing speakers. THATS A FACT! |

Yeah but that's only YOUR opinion....look at the DJ ratings and tell me how many of the DJs on top are NOT theatrical. I personally hate boring DJs that JUST play music...I personaly find it boring and I'd much rather be front and centre in front of the stage interacting witht he DJ rather than just being bored watching a hidden figure somewhre behind the decks. It's all part of the experience and most people agree with that. Just cause you don't want to see theatrics doesn't mean that others don't or that it makes BAD djs ;)
Oakie, Armin, Ferry, Tiesto, Johan Gielen just to name a few are pure pleasure to watch...Carl Cox is just an animal! ;) They woldn't be half as good/popular if they were just boring emotionless figures. Part of the reson why they are so good is because they are so emotional about the music and it shows through their theatrics! If a dj just sits there dead behind the decks then you're wondering if he even wants to be there - he looks boring and he looks bored! |
