Albert Einstein (March 14, 1879 – April 18, 1955) was a theoretical physicist who is widely regarded as the greatest scientist of the 20th century. He proposed the theory of relativity and also made major contributions to the development of quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and cosmology. He was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect and "for his services to Theoretical Physics".

After his general theory of relativity was formulated in November, 1915, Einstein became world-famous, an unusual achievement for a scientist. In his later years, his fame exceeded that of any other scientist in history, and in popular culture, Einstein has become a byword for great intelligence or even genius. His face remains one of the most recognizable in the world. This popularity has also led to widespread use of Einstein in advertising and merchandising, eventually including the registration of "Albert Einstein" as a trademark.

Basically without doubt the most influential person of the 20th century was Lenin. Whether that is the same as importance is another matter though...

Henry Ford. The whole reason roads, highways, big cities were built was because of the car. The car started whole new industries, it revived the steel industry, it changed society in more ways than anyone could ever imagine. Think of a world without cars. I can't even imagine it because it would be totally different. I would never have thought of Ford myself until seeing a presentation by a teacher in high school a few back and the abolutely ridiculous amount of things he listed that occurred or were changed by the advent of the car.

But was the presence of Henry Ford necessary? Perhaps he was just a catalyst for the inevitable? He may have been the one who pushed things that resulted in the way we perceive history, but how do we know that the very presence of Ford didn't actually stifle the development of some new, even greater breakthrough? The same goes for anyone whom we deem so goddamn important - time can only tell the inexpressible and the impossibly undone will be obscured from us forever.

Ever wonder if the world would have been a better place without you? But what defines better? Is the very nature of 'betterness' quantified by your existence?

Once again, time will only tell, and I doubt that any of us will be able to really judge.
