Imho it doesn't make a lot of sense choosing a scientist. Einstein did a lot of great things that is now being cornerstones of theoretical physics. Great guy, no doubt.
BUT:
Without him, someone else would have done it instead. Maybe a few years later but anyway. Lorentz and a few other (for me unknown) guy would probably have discovered special relativity and Hilbert contributed a lot to general relativity (for example he teached einstein the necessary differential matematics :) ). Einstein was no doubt the best teorical physicist of his time, but not the only one. He probably sped things up a bit, but not more. Same for hawkings and the others. Well that's my opinion at least.
I'd vote Hitler no doubt. The guy that stoped him was important, but without someone to stop? And then maybe it was not one single person who stoped him, while if I got my history right (if not please fill in) Hitler was more or less alone causing WW2? Which make him the most important guy. Not a nice guy, but an important guy. :)
again: imho. ;) |

I'd say the person or persons who invented internet. That's the most important tool the humans have thouhgt and many things has changed with internet. I think with this tool and all the things it involves we started a new era.
Think in terms of economy, society, communications... |
Vince Cerf is the father of the Internet and Tim Berners-Lee is the father of the web. |

No matter how important he is for the Catholic church and how good his legacy was, he's not to be compared among the "most important people of the 20th century" as his achievements were quite limited in that century if compared to others', such as Einstein's. |

science is one thing. Pope was a political figure as well as a man of faith. Helping to abolish comunism is preety huge as well as preventing Argentina - Chile war |

I wouldn't vote for the pope either but honestly, what did Einstein do that's so important?
Science can only be done in one way, it's the same whoever discovers it. It's only a matter of when.
Politics is different. If a war take place or not is certianly depending on the persons involved. |

| Good point with Lenin, which got me thinking about history. George Washington perhaps. The man, along with others, were responsible for making democracy what it is today. |
