Whats the next step for trance, how do you see it evolving over the next couple of years?
And If a new genre of trance were to evolve, what would you call it?

I see trance moving away from the uplifting commercial style of Ferry more towards the tougher techno trance sounds of JOOF, Christopher Lawrence etc. I think people are getting tired of the more obvious sounds and want something stronger.
You only needed to hear Oaky, Ferry at Ultra this year, even Digweed on his current US tour - they were playing way harder than I have heard them before. Funny thing is that all Okay's tracks were waay old, I remember Christopher Lawrence playing a bunch of them about three years ago. |

I think your right... I've noticed it myself in the last two or three years... theres more emphasis on the beat than on the melody...

umm? i believe there are about 5000 threads on ferry's "recent" sound. he has def. moved away from the uplifting stuff he use to produce... he is by far tougher and harder like you are talking about. |

Personally, I think Ferry's rebirth helped trance develop the sound that it's developing into today.
I see Trance moving more Techish, as if it gets any proggier, we'll turn monotonous.

To be honest, I haven't read the Ferry threads as I never liked his fluffy sound. That's why I was so suprised when I heard him at Ultra, he sounded like Christopher Lawrence, whom I have been a fan of for a long time.
I don't think Ferry is pionerring a new sound by a long shot, more picking up on what the underground guys have been playing for a long time. |

Yes, he also has two artist albums All or Nothing and UnHooked. He has done tracks with JOOF as well. |

Yeah, I remember people saying this in 1999. The emerging genre of "tech trance" was going to rescue everyone from the formulaic banality of the same boring anthems at every bloody party. Never happened. And then people were saying it again in 2001. The arrival of "Progressive" was going to put the nail in the coffin of the bloated, overwrought super-saw anthem scene once and for all. Never happened.
So long as there's an influx of newbies attracted to sweet, shiny, shallow plastic things, there will always be sweet, shiny, shallow plastic music for them. |

You are right, although I think you underestimate the influence of the progressive movement.
I do think that Ferry has taken influence from Djs like Christopher Lawrence, John OO Fleming etc. I haven't seen Oakenfold lately, so I can't comment except to say that he is probably picking up on Ferry, who is picking up on Lawrence LOL! |
