Actually, I'd be careful about taking these reports too seriously. I came across some document a year or so ago which said that the police Annual Report hasn't been taking into account population growth when coming up with their numbers. Some mpp was really concerned about this. And I think W5 once questioned the Police Comiss on this and there was a "no comment" reply.

well if they werent taking into account the population growth, wouldnt the crime rate go up?

example:
crimes/people
200,000/1,000,000 = 20,000 per 100,000
250,000/1,000,000 = 25,000 per 100,000

is my logic wrong?

Do I feel safe in Toronto? Yes. I feel completely safe walking around the city, even late at night alone. Even though I have been robbed and assaulted right outside my building (which I consider to be in a fairly good location) in broad daylight, with a number of people around. Out of the 3, I knew who 2 of 'em were, stupid s were picked up hours later

One thing no one seems to have mentioned is population density as well. If you take into account the number of people per some unit of area measurement, say km-squared, we're actually fairly close to some of the cities in the US when it comes to crime rates. In terms of homicides, I don't know, it seems like every week we hear something f***ed, but I do believe that the media is probably giving it much more exposure than in the past, leading to paranoia. Overall, I don't think the city is that bad.

2)Hmm, I don't know really what I'd do if a burglar broke in. If I was fairly certain that they weren't armed with a gun, I'd definitely confront them with a plethora of baseball bats, hockey sticks, and any sharp object I could get my hands on. It may sound like a stupid reaction, but the mere thought of someone doing that aggrivates me to no end.

Yo our prison population has grown steadily...and yet crime has decreased?

Something doesn't smell right.

The cops are rarely around when a crime happens...so don't say that the cops are preventing crimes or doing such a fantastic job that they are capturing the guilty and putting them all away :conf:

So, is it safe here? Or what?

:stongue: last time I called the cops over to help out a pregnant women who's husband beat the crap outta her, we waited over 1.5hr for the blues to arrive.

Tho...holding him hostage with a heavy frying pan near his head...sounds like as good a plan as any to me :p

holy ...no, Toronto isn't becoming UNSAFE. Why are so many people under the impression that Toronto is becoming the Bronx when in reality T.O has always remained one of the safest cities in the world, especially when you consider it's size.

ever think that the number of people getting convicted has gone up?

the numbers which i gave earlier, only include reported crime, and does not include the number of people convicted or released.

maybe lawyers and crime solving techniques are getting better?

Maybe

But somehow....I'm not sure I feel as safe walking the streets late at night

A few weeks ago I was walking a few blocks at like 3:45am to a friends place and some car pulled up offering a ride....I said no thanks...and got followed for 1 block....then I stopped and asked a taxi for the time and the car kept following...so the taxi guy offered me a ride for free

I'm so grateful for that taxi driver :)
I suppose people wise...Toronto has some really awesome and caring people....along with the crazies

I feel pretty safe here...I have been a victim of crime though...several times...like my previous cars getting broken into & having my toolbox stolen from my previous job...

There were 2 shootings right on my street, literally just outside my window in 2004. I don't feel any less safe, even though the thug population increased.

Don't start with people and you won't get anything. Just mind yo' bidnez!
