Is Toronto becoming a dangerous city to live in?

Reason for Question#1:
I'm asking cuz we got a suprise visit from some cops....seems someone was playin with a bbgun and took a shot at the TTC shelter, nearly missing some kid. They've been doing random checks of all homes that face that TTC shelter. Trying to catch the little punk (assuming it is a little punk).
And b4 u go assuming....I live in a family oriented neighbourhood and it's very nice and quiet. Heck we have a McDonald's, a med building, and a traffic court nearby.
So, is it safe here? Or what?
With all this talk of guns lately and fellow clubbers getting killed in their homes...I dunno anymore.
If Florida passes a stupid law allowing guns, whats to say some dumbass won't want the same in our big city.
Yo....we got a lot of foreigners here....and they got red necks tendancies too....with self defence frame of minds. Why I'll bet they got some kind of defence in their home just in case. Hmmmmmm
Question #2:
If you were being broken into at your place....what weapon do you have on hand to protect your ass...and what would you really do? |

It is safe here, without question. Compare our crime and particulaly violent crime states with other cities Toronto's size (or even half that) and you will note that we are well below the average. Additionally, our violent crime rate has decreased every year for the past 12 (I think). The reason the city seems less safe is because the magnatude of violent crimes is increasing (ie. more deaths from violent crime) and because it is getting more media coverage then in the past.
I have a phone with 911 on speed dial to defend me. What would I do, hit 911 and hope to God that the burgler did not confront me, if confronted I would do whatever the burgler requested of me. |

ah...sorry, not going to happen in Canada, allowing people to walk around with guns. We dont even let most security guards carry guns, let alone the general population.
and as for our soaring crime problem. Canada as a whole as actually experienced nearly a 50% drop in violent crime(saw it on a CBC report).
and as for Toronto itself. well i tried to go on StatsCan and get some stuff, but YOU HAVE TO PAY!:whip: :whip:
but this i what i found for free:
All Crimes per 100,000 people
(including traffic offences)
2003
------------
Canada: 8,884.8
Quebec: 7,084.1
Ontario: 6,657.9
Manitoba: 13,370.4
Saskatchewan: 17,208.9
Newfoundland: 6,738.3
PEI: 9,454.9
Nova Scotia: 9,203.8
New Brunswick: 7,985.5
Alberta: 11,092.6
BC: 13,461.3
Yukon: 28,409.5
Northwest Territories: 39,802.3
Nunavut: 36,496.1
So that shows me that Ontario actually has the lowest amount of crime per person in Canada. We are well below the national average. I know this isnt specifically TO, but its still a good sign. |

^^^^^ That report doesn't make any sense almost considering that we have a continuous gun problem in the city with murders continuing to climb over the past few years. I guess I must be missing something.
Toronto's pretty safe though overall I think. |

2003 Toronto Police Annual Report
According to this report
over the course from 99-03:
Crimes per 100,000
Crimes exluding traffic offences:
99: 7782.9
00: 7673.7
01: 7708.3
02: 7600.8
03: 7505.1
Homicides:
99: 1.9
00: 2.3
01: 2.3
02: 2.3
03: 2.5
So homicides are up 31.5%, up a whole half death. thats crazy! noT! |

While murders are increasing most other forms of violent crime are decreasing. It seems more dangerous because the crimes are more severe even though they are fewer in number. |

what about all the crimes that don't get reported.
I'm sure there are pple in bad neighbourhoods that probably wouldn't report things cuz they're afraid of what can come after. |

but if you are now counting the crimes you dont hear of, your perception would be different wouldnt it?
The fact is, you only think that crime is out of control because you hear about it on the media. |

Actually, I'd be careful about taking these reports too seriously. I came across some document a year or so ago which said that the police Annual Report hasn't been taking into account population growth when coming up with their numbers. Some mpp was really concerned about this. And I think W5 once questioned the Police Comiss on this and there was a "no comment" reply. |

I'm not sure I understand the concern. The report numbers cited are per 100,000. If the murder rate is 2.5/100,000 then it is 2.5/100,000 whether the population is 10,000 or 10,000,000 people.... the rate doesn't change with raw population numbers. |

I think they mentioned the question was more to do with how they calculated the 2.5/100,000 |
