USA VS. EUROPE (pg. 4)

As far as the USA vs. Europe is concerned, everyone knows that Europe (and Canada too) for the most part is WAY ahead of the States in every way. However, this is through no fault of our own, and people like SOS make it hard for us to ever progress because of their ignorance.
SOS: to complain about something like this is like saying Europe sucks because they can't make rock and roll music. Well no crap, rock and roll was made in America, but Europe and Europeans do not suck because of this. Just like trance was made in Europe, and Americans do not suck for trying to emulate it.
Please don't diss on America, we are trying...and if you were any kind of real fan of the trance scene, you would give us credit for that instead of dissing. Just because our parties may not be as live does NOT mean we appreciate the music any less, and that's what it is all about is it not???
So instead of bitching and moaning, it is my opinion that we shoud just listen to trance and party! Sorry for rambling, but I take my music very seriously (as I am sure we all do) and I would hate to think that any of us tranceaddicts thinks that they are above the others simply because they live in a different area, and have easier access to the music. I love trance and clubbing and I live in Texas, USA...definitely NOT the scene. But I still go out because I love it, and I bet I love the music just as much as you, SOS. So there.
Peace~~~Steve Trance

| Woooo woooo this thread has become quite interesting....Lets just look at the facts here....The Europe rave scene is superior to all across the world....Yet, I dont wanna hear this Canada is better than the U.S crap....Ive lived in Canada nearly all my life and the only thing to do in Canada is freeze your ass off for 10 months out the year....If you think a rave in say Montreal is better than a rave in Miami (Kimball Collins) then come to Miami....80 degrees and sunny year round, we take our raves outside under the stars by the beach....I praise Europe for the scene they have created, but, my goddess Canada blows and remember I was born in Canada and lived there till I was 19.... |

Somehow this has turned out to be a discussion about UK vs. the US/Canada. The original question was whether the clubs in europe was better than those in the US. Coming from Denmark, I think I can give an unbiased oppinion on this since the worst clubs are here (all the good ones has been forced in the ground due to ecstacy hysteria).
I've been to clubs in both Ibiza, Germany and the UK, and I have to say that those in the UK and (the UK-arranged ones) in Ibiza seems to have forgotten something about the open-mindedness of rave-culture. If you're not british you're basically scum and will have a harder time to fit in.
Also the UK have a tendency to wanting to "dictate" hip music: Last year it was euro-trance, this year only hard-house is acceptable (I even saw a UK-guy on another board arguing Darude was hard-house) - resulting in talented producers from the rest of the world being overlooked (Picotto for a long time among others).
So no matter how lame clubs are in the US they are probably better for the true ravers who go there out of curiousity for new tunes and in search for a good time, rather than to do drugs and parading in their newest outfits.
..And on the subject of the best producers - they come from europe (Italy, Germany, Holland and Belgium), but given the larger scene here that's probably only natural (likewise we have no decent hip-hop/soul artists in europe).
Bye.. |

Goodfella, mind if I asked you at which time /stage did you see oakey? , you see I went to DV to and as I'm quite a big fan of his' I was looking forward to it, but when I went to the "progressive" stage, lucien foort was playing. I was under the impression that he...I dunno... missed an airplane from ibiza or something like that
just wondering...

I know... that's what really pissed me off this year, about reading and listening to all this comments calling Hard House the new Trance. IM like.... this is bull!! then thats where you find the tru fans that stick with their music, I went to Gatecrasher's fodums, and you could see that subject all over the place, there was that they have to move on to the next step and crap... but there was the TRANCEADDICTS that defended it no matter what.. and now, those who called Darude --- sandstorm your bullting me, thats Techno/trance ... get the point of House, and the sound of House is totatlly different, there's been conbinations of Trance to house .. but thats the evolution, anyways, many said IBIZA was gonna be the Hard House, but there's also times when they say Garage is, and then they come up saying " TRANCE .. again hitting IBIZA!??! so Im like.. this is all trend and following just whats evolving.. and I personally stick with what I like.. if something else comes out that I like. I may follow that too... but trance is my stuff.. I still like Eurodance although is kinda old now, but I still like , it don't matter to me if is old..
About the raves on Miami.... aa they are good.. The ULTRA fest 2000 was a beach party in which some big names DJ"S participated and there was tends from CLUBS like gatecrasher and so on.. it was so COOL... although a bit overcrowded, btu it was on the beach till 11 pm.. that's some sweet thing, then everyone heads of to the clubs... a great way to finish it.. and man !! you forgot GEORGE ACOSTA at shadow lounge.. that's a TRANCE NITE !!

Hmm...
Well I have had the unique opportunity to party both in the states and europe.
I have been to several raves in Los Angeles, CA USA. As well as to clubs like GIANT. In Europe I attended Sensation, Love Parade, and some small clubs in Amsterdam and Paris, and Barcelona. Unfortunately I did not get to the world famous Ibiza or London clubs, which is quite a shame.
For the most part we hear in the American dance music scene do look to Europe for the newest and "best" in Dj's, Producers and dance music; and recently (past 2 years or so) there has been a wonderful influx of such talent across the pond, Oakenfold, PvD, Cox, Sasha and Digweed to name just the bigger names that have come out here. Too alot of us this is all pretty new and we embrace it wholeheartedly. Offcourse to many of you these guys are old news, and played out as they are accessilbe to you much more often. So there is a BIG difference in our scenes.
Another diff is the rockstar status of your DJ's and the rock concert atmospher of your parties eg. Sensation at the Amsterdam Arena. I was quite impressed and blown away with the production quality and ofcourse the DJ Lineup, not to mention the venue. As far as people go though, we have had some HUGE raves out here, usually outdoor/indoor combos at various fair grounds like HOw Sweet it is '2000, JuJuBeats, Audiotistic, Cyberfest to name a few...all ranged between 30,000-50,000 people, so we DO have BIG parties, and these parties can afford to pay for BIG NAME DJ's. The difference here is the type of people that atttend. In Europe u have people who are more respectful of the music and each other, people who know who the dj's are for the most part, and people who dont crowd on the floor's messed up on E, perhaps this contributes to a "better" party.
As far as the clubs go, GIANT is a great venue here in LA. It is an older crowd, people are drunk or on E aswell, and you have ure mix of cool and obnoxious folks, but the great thing about GIANT is its setup. An amazing sounds system that sounds clean while it blares out the loudest and deepest of treble and bass lines. An amazing lighting setup and a great dance floor to boot. It's relatively small and intimate and the best part is the DJ is on a 2foot high platform right at the front of the room where everyone can clearly see and (if they wanted to) touch him. I saw PvD here and it was quite memorable.
There is some good stuff coming out of the States as well now with the increased exposure to europe as well as the use of the internet and digital music technology...namely BT, Kimball Collins, John Kelly. Paul Oakenfold and Carl Cox are both britishers last i checked...
Couple of other things that were wrong in the earlier posts. Electronic music has a long and somewhat convoluted history, it did not "originate" in Europe anymore then in originated in the States. Officially Tehno originated in the suburbs of Detroit and House from the club called the Warehouse in Chicago, however we can go back to the early experiments with radio test tones in the US in the 50's of John Cage or the bookla box and early moog synthesizer designed and created in the US for the most part. Looping techniques which are the foundations of dance music were also developed in the states by men like Steven Reich and Philip Glass, not to mention the original "break beat" recorded by JAMES BROWN and the "breaks" loops created by DJ Kool Herc a Jamerican! hehe...Sure it looks like it was all the states now, but throught out there was back and forth influences each feeding the other. From Stravinsky, to shtauphausen, moroder, and kraftwerk not to mention all the current dj's and producers are all european.
That's the cool thing about the music we listen to, its the 1st truly mixed/diverse music if we stop for a moment to think about its history, it completely embraces black, white, gay, straight, male, female...everything has come together to make the great music we call "electronica" and to bicker about it and try to pigeon hole it is to be indeed ignorant and small minded. The more you learn about the history of this music you will find out how petty the whole us vs them, this vs that argument is.

The US and Canada have good trance djs and producers too eg.. Sandra Collins, Christopher Lawrence, Carl Cox, BT, John Aquaviva, Hatiras ... but u know what, us here in Canada and US get to see alot of the european dj's in our clubs and parties so you can't say that you can only see a good dj in europe...
It must be weird there where electronic music is so mainstream, I kinda like the fact that I won't get sick of hearing good songs over and over and get sick of them.. |

| europe because the clubs are better than in the u.s mostly because the best dj`s are from there, secondly because the u.s is after europe when it comes to club music |

Some facts.
The heart of Trance/Club/House is in England.
They also have the biggest Dance scene.
But...Holland is taking over with their massive trance parties. Also , Dutch DJ's are VERY populair everywhere.
Dutch parties e.g. Sensation , Innercity , DanceValley.. own because of a mix between the best DJ's , dutch trance (uplifting) and a nice drugs policy (everybody uses XTC).
This combination opens a world you have to visit. |

| Yeah mate, I totally agree with you! The dutch parties are the best and biggest in the world (Sensation was echt wel kicken en Innercity gaat het ook helemaal worden) Unfortunately I still think the UK club-scene (as I hear about it and watch it on tv) is the best! |
