First I gotta say, Doctor604, your reply was awesome, so well put.
Anyway, I'm from England, partied there for ages, and now I party in Calgary, Canada, when I was in england, I went to alot of the smaller clubs, why, the atmosphere was better than the bigger flashier clubs down the road, because the people there were more like posers cos that was the place to be, and it seems alot of the main big clubs in england have gone the root of being big famous and now feel they don't have to try as hard, whereas the smaller clubs are trying to stick to what it is all about, which is, the DJ, The People, all enjoying the music.
Although you have all this cheesey crap going on, which seems to be all driven by money, you do still have a whole load of clubs that are amazing, and the same goes for the big events and alike, I love hearing about thinks like Homelands getting pissed on with rain, but the people don't care, they are there for the music, and aslong as that is there, the party is still on.
You see when electronica came around, America took one root and Europe took another (the EDM root), America went to Rock, Hip Hop, and so on, and the same thing is happening to them as it is happening to EDM in Europe.
But the fact remains that generally, Europe does have the better EDM scene, they been in it longer, had more people brought up around it, they are just well educated in it whether they want to or not, but if you went to the states, they are alot more educated with the Rock and Hip Hop.
As for all this VS crap, it depends what you want from the scene, you can go to many places all over the world and find the good partys, that ain't big, haven't got the superstar DJ, but he knows what to spin and how to spin it, and the crowd is loving it, and makes an atmosphere, and thats what its all about, you can go to the best club/festival/event in the world, but if the people there ain't having a good time and making an atmosphere, then its gonna blow bigtime, doesn't matter how good the DJ is.
I also gotta say, that Canada does have afew good places to go party, but I haven't been to any yet, and Calgary really doesn't have anything, you goto the raves or clubs, and its usually the bunch of people near the booth that are really having a good time, cos thats usually where the REAL music lovers are, the rest just seem like stray dogs, this is because alot of people are into the scene because its on the rise, its like a new trend, and they wanna be apart of it, but this unfortunately is everywhere, you will always have these people.
I think one of the USs and Canadas problems are, they don't have as many people into the music, and those few are scattered all over the country, but if you could get all those real EDM lovers and place them all in one city, you could make a superclub that would go right up there with the bigboys, most of the citys in the US and Canada, really don't have enough EDM lovers to have a company put the money into making a huge club, its to much of a risk for them, but lucky for the US they do have some big awesome scenes, like Ultra, and generally from what I have read and seen, Miami would be a really nice place to go clubbing, outside of Europe if I had to live somewhere for the club scene, it would be in the south of Florida.
but I'm gonna stop writing, I'm tired and can't think straight, all this prolly doesn't make sence aswell, oh and Carl Cos is British, so is Max Grahem really, but he has spent most his life living in Canada, and thats where he learned to DJ and thats what made him the type of DJ he is, so even though he is deep down British, he is a Canadian DJ, and I think Citizen. |

EXCUSE ME, ARE YOU TALKING? SERIOUSLY?
Name ONE city in Canada that has a bigger trance/EDM scene then the 4 biggest EDM scene cities in the US - Miami(just say south florida in general), New York City, San Francisco and LA. NAME ONE.
I've been all around the US, and I've visited vancover for a few months last winter, and the scene there blows. I don't know about the other canadian cities, but the North West scene is horrid compared to the bigger trance scenes out in the US.
Obviously, EDM is way bigger in Europe then the USA, since we're all bias towards EDM music, their clubs are more 'technically' sound better as well.(Even though alot of the clubs i've been to here have been pretty decee, but it's more the "parties" and "raves" here that have better vibes. Even though the parties in europe are way better, US promotors do a better job at making better events compared to our Canadian counter-parts.
Don't bull me, I think it's complete horse- that any canadian city has a better scene then any of the big scene cities in the US. |

Hehe four years later, better than never...but you're so right! Granted, in Canada I've only been to the Guvernment in Toronto 2002 and I was NOT impressed. I've also been to MUCH better techno clubs in Detroit, (small venues like Motor in which I saw dj's like Carl Cox play in front of 300 people) and to places in Washington D.C. like Glow. These aren't premier or well known "edm" scenes like NYC, Miami, L.A. etc. but it just doesn't seen Canada could even begin to compete...I accept the fact that this is only my opinion and a biased one at that, but I had to put my two cents in , four years late. =)
Because the original post was in 2000 I can guarantee the scene in America is much different than it was 4 years ago, whether better or worse is another story. Also, it would be stupid for anyone to say EURO's EDM scene sucks...They started it all for crying out loud, (except Techno - I still attribute this to Detroit although I'm sure I'll get flamed by many who disagree - assuming anybody else ever sees this post =))But Europe and the US are two completely different scenes...I respect and would LOVE to see the EURO scene first hand but would stop short of ever saying it's better than ours or vice versa.

I've been clubbing in Miami, San Francisco, LA, and in England. England...by far a better atmsophere. People there knew the music and it was obvious. LA is full of clubs, but the two big ones are Avalon (Giant) and Circus (Spundae)...and well, they each bring two very different crowds. Circus is easily the crowd that knows and appreciates the music more. Avalon, from my one time there, well...brought in a bunch of froo-froos who go just to be drugged out and bounce around or dress up and stuff.
Here in San Francisco, the two big clubs are Ten15 and Ruby skye. Ruby Skye is a lot like Avalon in LA and Ten15 (with Spundae) is like Circus. Two very different crowds. Events at Ten15 destry Ruby Skye even though the club isn't nearly as nice, simply because it has a better crowd, thus a better vibe. There's another place that's not as well known called the Mezzanine where Spundae holds a lot of special events. It's a very special place w/ the best sound system in this city and everyone loves it - it has a very underground feel which people who miss the days of true underground parties appreciate. Spundae has brought in acts such as the Chemical Brothers, Tiesto (twice), Sasha (and he plays there again on July 2), Way Out West, and others there. Others like Richie Hawton, Victor Calderone, and Tom Stephan have played there, too. It's a place where when a big act plays, you know the vibe is going to be awesome. I really wish more big acts were there.
I went to the old Space once in Miami a few years ago while on vacation back home (I'm originally from Orlando, Fla) and remember it being huge and lot of fun. But there were too many people there that reminded me of Ruby Skye here in SF there. It wasn't a huge act playing, so it might be different when huge acts are there.
I went clubbing in London and some place near London a couple years ago when I was there for work. I was pretty drunk going to the places so I don't even remember the names. I just remember everyone was having a great time, knew the music and it was a true party. It's something I've seen here in SF a couple of times in the past, but not often enough.
Parties back in the 90s in the US can't be touched by what I experienced in England, though. This was all before I was under 21, but I still got in and well, they were simply AMAZING. I never, ever went home disappointed. A lot of warehouse raves, gym raves, etc etc....
Then the US government cracked down on all these scenes and made them illegal everywhere...and now have been targeting clubs in the past few years.
Some clubs will actually refuse acts because of the past history of the crowds there and how even if the government thinks you knowingly realize that any types of drugs are being used in the club, whether you search the person or not or do everything to prevent it, they have the right to shut you down and classify the club as a crack house. Yes, this is a real law, known as the Rave Act. People in the US know all about it.
So now true vibes are very hard to find. There is still the occasional underground warehouse parties which you have to find out about through friends and they are so much fun. Problem is though, little chance of any amazing DJs, which really sucks. |

hell yeah - and the more i think about it, it would be cool to find out if people's feelings have changed since 2000 since it seemed the general consensous was that the u.s. lagged behind in everything...
