OK good. I just want to make it clear that my comments are not partisian. If the conservatives or any other party were caught doing this id be calling for their ass on a platter as well.
For the record for all the ideologist out there. I think it was 33 Liberal MPs that just voted for the traditional definintion of marriage in the house of commons yesterday.
So don't think that by voting Liberal you will have all your social ideologies come true. |

Maybe I'm being stupid, but how exactly do you 'buy' and election? Isn't an election based on invididual people choosing who to vote for, and if that's not the case, then why didn't I get a cheque last election? |

How you buy an election..
Create a federal program. Have your friends win the contracts for these programs (untendered). Have your friends overcharge and double bill for work done. Have your friends then make huge campaign "donations" to your party. Use those donations to finance the election for your party. You have just successfully embezzled taxpayers money for use in an election campaign and since no one else has access to the same kinds of funds you have essentially bought the election.
Kind of reminds me of a simpsons episode...
"um im looking for mr bill, wink wink"
I get the feeling people still do not realize the full implications of what has gone on here. |

I completely understand that, I just don't understand the jump from 'embezzeled funds' to 'more votes'
If people aren't gonna vote for you, people won't vote for you. It's that simple. You can't buy and election win. |

More money buys more spin doctors, more ad space and more ways to convince people to vote for you. More money allows for a much more sophisticated ad campaign which is more likely to win votes. You can't honestly tell me that advertising doesn't strongly influence people's decisions. |

Hardly.
Politics are reported with much more balance in Canada thanks to a multi-party system, and as a result, the people who care and are likely to vote are generally better informed. When was the last time you heard a Canadian decide that is was right for us to go to war in Iraq because we had to help help find the weapons of mass destruction?
Spin doctors only work against those who already poorly informed.
I'd continue this discussion with you jay, but I'm hungry, so I'm getting off my comp for lunch. |

But on a personal note, it's realy difficult to decide. Neither of the parties in particular have any issues on their agenda that will directly impact me in any way that I can see. |
I hear this so often, and it sickens me. Sure, a majority of the issues may not speak to us now, but what about the state of the country we stand to inherit?
Voting based on the notion that some forward thinking is being done socially in government is nice, but based in fairytale. Democratic Governments react to society just as much, if not more than society reacts to them.
The Liberal government might take up the banner of social causes for PR, but what CONCRETE things have they done in that respect. Their track record on youth, from justice to social welfare and poverty has been horrid @ best. It was their withholding of taxpayers funds over the 90's, and not returning them to the provinces in transfer payments that has crippled our once strong social programs. Their "downloading" of costs to the provinces (Paul Martin's brainchild) is what produced this nice big surplus they brag about. (and don't re-invest into the country)
Corruption aside, they have truly done very little to move this nation forward. I don't buy this "devil you know" crap. It's a lazy cop-out. Anyone who says this has just grabbed the occasional headline, and can't be bothered to research their options. |

jayx1, instead of dwelling on every negative the liberal party has done, why don't you accentuate all the positives the other parties have to offer? i have you on my ignore list anyways, so i won't be able to see your response, but i am sure like many other people on TOTA, we are tired of your incessant negative political slants. tell us why we should vote for a party rather than telling us why we should not. my ideology matches the liberals the best, the conservatives the least. with a harper led government, would we be in iraq? would gay marriage be quashed? where would health care be? i care less for tax cuts as i do about social programs. would we be a part of a star wars program that would not work? <--- if you understood how icbm's work, you would know why.
i've heard great things about you personally at parties. i hope your online personna will start to match your real world antics! |

Then vote NDP or Green. How anyone can condone criminal behaviour is beyond me.

I don't agree with their idealogies either. I'm not condoneing corruption by voting liberal. I dont' see it that way, sorry if you do however. |

| The liberal party is the party closest to my opinions, but I wouldnt vote them, just to show that what they did was very wrong. I would try to find some small party that had similar opinions to me (but probably not big enough to get into the parliament), or i would simply just vote blank. |

Why should he do the homework for those in dire need of education?
The media has finally turned on the Liberals these past few years, so plenty of info on the entire political scene is out there. If you are ignorant or accepting of their track record, making a pros/cons synopsis of everyone else isn't likely to do much. People like that are as likely to lose the blinders as they are to lose the stupid. |
