How do you create rich and fat sounds?

I mean all I get with vanguard is lows and some mids.
I almost never get high sounds.
The problem is that the only synth i know how to program is vanguard...

If you only get low and mids, why wont you just add some highs? :tongue2

And to get your fat sound, just copy the Vang a couple or few times and give each his own EQ. (Low's, Mid's, High's)

What do you mean you don't get highs? Vanguard always gives me extremely bright highs that I have to tone down quite a bit.

Try creating a duplicate of the patch and transpose and detune the oscilators wider on the duplicate. Try all the different waveforms too. Pulses and squares work well for lower end I've found. Ajx Saws work really well for highs.

Failing that, when your mixing down duplicate the audio track and cut the highs above 7-10 KHz on the original and cut the lows below 7-10 KHz on the copy. If you add some stereo imaging to the highs it gives a nice shifting sparkly top end to it. Doesnt really fatten it up as such, but gives it a bit of that extra depth. If you dont have access to a stereo imager, a slight delay or reverb can also do the trick.

I find the same with Vanguard - it can have a fizzy, tinny top end. Drow - what kinds of melody are you playing on the Vanguard? I assume it's a main melody rather than a bassline. What are you using to monitor the output from your sequencer? Speakers? Headphones?
The Drow
I'm playing a main lead.
I have 2.1 speakers and I'm gonna get inspire 4.1 :)

this might sound stupid but do you play with the filter??? cuz most of the presets are filtered... try that (if you didnt know) :D
The Drow
lol i do

Thanks for the tips.
But I don't get it.
I tried to detune and stuff, still not much highs.

vanguard has tonnes of highs. its oscillators alias so much i dont see how you are possibly not getting highs.

to test this out just set the filter to band pass/x band pass or any of the high pass filters, open the cutoffs on the envelopes and listen to it screech.

highs do not = fat sounds though.

stacking up loads of detuned and stereo spread vanguards doesnt up the fatness that much either. its like trying to artificially beef up the sound by 'unison'ing' it.

simplicity. more oscillators and more timbres dont necessarily make a sound fatter. it makes it more complex but thats not always desirable. the fattest thing ive ever heard is an overdriven 303 straight into a mixing console.

thats 1 saw/square wave oscillator. 1 very basic filter. and only a filter decay envelope. thats it.

alot of people get bogged down making these monster, 6 oscillator, 3 parts multitimral, 50 voice monster leads. and sometimes it works (check out some of lab4 virus lead on candyman - in hell). but sometimes you just need to retain some of that simplicity and purity in the sound.

single saw wave oscilaltor with tonnes of distortion in vanguard, low cutoff, high res makes nice fat acid.

The updated version uses alias-free oscies so it sounds way better. Mine is the old one, so the high frequencies are crazy in the ears. I don't understand how he cannot get highs in Vanguard. That's the most ear piercing VSTi I've ever heard. I cannot wear my headphones with it when programming sounds. I can do that with every other synthie. :)
