Paul Martin's "save my ass" address to the nation. (pg. 3)

Very interesting indeed!

People forget that the Conservs had the same type scandalous insider shananigans during the 8 years of Mulroney governing. It is not right but this happens on every level of government (municipal/provincial/federal) within our corporations from clerk to president.

There is corrupt powers at work everywhere - and the fact that we are wasting out time and energies fighting and arresting potsmokers and prosecuting petty crimes instead of going after WHITECOLLAR crime is maddening to say the least......

Look at ENRON (and the massive cover-up that ensued)Worldcom, Conrad Black, Martha Stewart, Sponsorship scandal....etc - this CULT OF CORPORATE bull mentallity - profit profit profit - bottom line and blah blah blah - will be the end of us ----- integrity means ----- the amount you can use, abuse, who you can -over or get away with is insane and disgusting. Subsconsciously we must know we are doomed for we just keep on ing it up and taking it - trying to emerge the one with the least amount of on our face at the end of the day and calling ourselves pious and human....WTF!

I am a strong believer in the classic LIBERAL agenda - CHANGE and open thought. Perhaps this government under this PM is ineffectual but I do believe the proposed mandate that this Liberal government set out with its budget recommendations is important to all Canadians.

In June if we do go to the polls (I hope not) are only other choice (because of the voting split) will put a mirror face to our neighbours down south. That is almost as scary and horrifying.

I will take a 200 million dollar sponsorship scandal over an agendist "so called" moral Conservsative "just as shady" government anyday. Long term effects of a conservative Government under Harper in power for 4 years will make this "sponsorship scandal" look like pocketchange.

The things that have been accomplished under the LIBERAL government in the last 10 years have been amazing. HUMAN RIGHTS/IMMIGRATION/LACK OF RECESSION/ACCESS TO PROGRAMS.

No government is perfect. And Martin is wearing the egg that Cretien left on his face from a year and a half ago.

Cretien might have been a bit of a prick but he didn't take and helped keep this country together.

Martin and his "father fulfillment" dream is sadly being wasted by a man who should have never been PM.

Although it may be too late - Martin is right that we the people should know the facts before we go to another election.

Until there is a major overhaul in our public conscious and accountability - again we will find ourselves making the choice between the lesser of evils.

Rant over:happy2:

Mulroney lost on average one cabinet minister per year during his reign due to scandal.

Mr. Harper is counting on it. Summer election / less voters == easier win.

Without question Duceppe is the most brilliant man in Canadian politics today.

Personally, I would like to see the results of the Gomery inquiry before going to the polls. I am one of those few voters that actually wants to be informed prior to marking my ballot. I see no harm in allowing the present government to contiune until after the results are published. If the Canadian electorate thought of this issue logically they would take the same position, however, since when is politics ruled by logic and reason.

If the opposition were to force a dissolution of parliament prior to that then it is for electoral advantage pure and simple. That being said I certainly wouldn't blame the opposition for that as I would consider the same in their position. Why risk waiting for the results as there is some chance that the conclusions of the inquiry may not be as negative as the present perception people have? It is a tough call to make as forcing an early election can sometimes create a backlash.... I'm not sure this is an instance where it would but it is plausible.

Another thing to consider is whether or not any of the parties are in a position to run a campaign at present. Usually, it takes parties a couple of years to escape from the debt of a general election campaign. Without adequate funds it is tough to win votes. Based on the rhetoric of the day I would presume that the Conservatives are ready or have arranged some type of financing, however, they are going to have to convience one of the other parties to vote down the government with them. I can almost guarentee you that will not be the NDP as there is no way they are ready for an election at this time (they were millions in debt prior to the last, they must be worse off now). This leaves the Bloc. I have no idea whether the Bloc is ready to go to the polls, however, I suspect they may be... being a regional party allows them to limit their campaigning which makes their campaigns cost a fraction of the other parties'. My hunch is that the government will be defeated before the end of spring, however, I am not willing to go on record with that as a prediction. We should have some interesting political theater until June.

Ive already seen enough. All that will come out is MORE corruption. It's time to let the voters decide.

As for the PCs, they had scandals but they were punished for it. And those scandals were nowhere near as huge and damaging to democracy as this one is. They were reduced to 2 seats in 1993 and eventually had to be disbanded to form a new party. The same needs to happen to the Liberals. This party's brand is rotten to the core. It's time for them to regroup like the right wing parties have.

Wouldn't you rather wait until you have the results of the inquiry. If you are so certain of the systemic corruption in the Liberal Party then having the inquiry's results will only strengthen people's views that the Liberals are evil. The only reason to force an election now rather then wait for the results is for fear that the results will not be as bad as the present rhetoric/perception.

I'm surprised by you Jayx. You claim that your hatred of the Liberal Party is due to a distain for corruption and that you want them out because you think they are bad for this country not because you are a Conservative. If you are trully concerned for the wealfare of democracy in Canada then you would wait for the results of the inquiry... in truth you would wait for the results before you passed your own judgement. With this post you have clearly tipped your hat and proven to all that read it you are a Conservative practicing partisan politics rather then a concerned citizen seeking change.

I'm disappointed, I wanted to believe your concern was for Canada, turns out I was wrong.

LMFAO. Buddy, you are fkn halarious???
Gomery, the PM's buddy, is going to blame everyone but the PM. Its a sham to please the idiots of this country who are swayed by a heart felt apology from a crook and a liar. He can steal from you but as long as he looks directly into the camera and says im sorry ill forgive him.

And have 8 more months of a parliament that is mired in corruption? What good will that do us? We haev already seen enough to know that the Liberals are corrupt beyond imagination. It's time to clear the air so that we can get back down to the business of running the nation. How can a nation be governed under a cloud of mistrust by the electorate?

Having elections NOW would be a good thing for the nation. Excersizing your right to choose a leader is NEVER a bad thing (unless we happen to live in Cuba)

As they say on TV, 'Paul, you're fired'

By LINDA WILLIAMSON

Watching Paul Martin address the nation last night, I couldn't help thinking of all the times he and his predecessor didn't speak to Canadians directly.

Not after 9/11, even though 24 of our countrymen were murdered by terrorists. Not when we joined the war in Afghanistan. Not when we declined to back the U.S. in Iraq; not when we naively rejected the U.S. missile defence program.

Not when the government refused to compensate thousands of victims of the tainted blood scandal, many of whom are dying as they continue to await justice today (despite a hasty Liberal flip-flop on the issue Wednesday night, which will change little). Not even when the government decided to redefine the institution of marriage.

No, none of those things were deemed important enough for the Liberal prime minister to address the nation.

But hey, through all of those events, the Liberals were doing fine in the polls.

Now, of course, thanks to AdScam and evidence at the resulting Gomery inquiry of corruption too repugnant to ignore, the Liberals have fallen behind the Conservatives for the first time since the late 1980s. So naturally, it's a national crisis!

Liberals have long confused their interests with those of the country -- just as, if even a fraction of the AdScam allegations prove true, they clearly confused their own pockets with those of average Canadians. But this is just too much.

Think about what Martin asked of us last night: He wants us to let ethically compromised Liberals continue to spend our money for almost a year, until the ongoing inquiry into how they stole our money is complete.

After more than a year in office in which his main accomplishments were (a) calling an inquiry into the scandal his party created and (b) becoming known as a ditherer on every other issue, he wants us to believe he has work to do that's far too important to be derailed by an election.

The Liberals have spent all week announcing this "work" -- which the rest of us would describe as "pre-election goodies." There's the latest bid to improve a perennially messed-up immigration system. There's the foreign policy and defence review that's been languishing a mere seven years or so. (It goes well with that national daycare program promised, oh, 12 years ago in the Red Book that Martin wrote.)

Why, on Tuesday the Liberals even had an epiphany on helping crime victims and war veterans! They must be desperate. Next they'll be telling us they're finally going to scrap the GST -- if we just give them a little more time.

Last night, with a straight face, Martin lamented that "partisan jousting" over the scandal is paralyzing Parliament. This, from the guy who a week ago was screaming non-sequiturs in the House about the Conservatives' "hidden agenda" to destroy health care, rather than answer a simple question about his own Gomery testimony.

He wants us to believe it would be bad for the country to have an election before Gomery's final report on AdScam comes out -- some eight months from now. This, from the guy who called the last election before any of the really damning facts were known. (He said he had to do it so he could fix health care "for a generation," remember? Great job he did, eh?)

For all its urgency, there was nothing new in Martin's message, or his absurd "commitment" to call an election precisely when it will be most convenient for the Grits. Except that it was the most blatant, manipulative, power-grabbing ploy they've come up with yet.

An address to the nation? Martin's brazen, grasping TV performance was more in keeping with that other Thursday night prime-time show, The Apprentice, where contestants argue desperately for their jobs.

All that was missing was for Conservative Leader Stephen Harper -- whose response was strong and sensible -- to come out and say, "Paul, you're a disaster. It's over. You're fired."

Now it's just a matter of time.
