a discussion which sparked at least once at some point when having a night out! :toothless
personal opinion, can't really compare DJing skill with producing skill. having said that, I have more respect for DJs who have mastered their skill well, because they can turn even the most obscure tracks into a dancefloor monster!

now see... to me that's overkill (particularly 19-26).
what's he trying to be?
a dj should play other peoples' tracks more than their own. seeing more of this from tiesto (TIC & TIC2 bah!), ferry and to a lesser extent avb. Less about dj'g and more about selling their own productions methinks.
i'll leave it to xenon to put in that awesome quote from Desyn Masiello :p |

Its called a LIVE Act... and no you wont see them "produce" on stage but its the closest thing to it...
Secondly not everyone can grab a copy of Reason/Cubase/FLStudio and write good music... It takes years of practice to create sounds from scratch and make them EXACTLY the way you want them ... It takes years of practice to be able to write music that actually has substance, that actually goes somewhere...
A DJ's job is to control a crowds state of mind using other peoples music... There is no comparison. Its like going to an Art Exhibition...who do you think people really give a about? The Artists or the dude who puts on the exhibition? When you go see a movie do people give two s about the guy who put the reel of film in the movie projector... or the director of the movie?
Sure not everyone can put on an art exhibition... or even put reel of film in a projector for that matter... I know what I would prefer to do. |

Djing is fun hobby requiring little to no musical talent. You are just playing other peoples songs in your order.
Producing could also be considered a fun hobby, but requires an assload of musical talent OR a lot of time behind an appropriate program and some luck.
That said they are different and producers who tour because they write a good track often aren't decent djs. James Holden springs to mind, his mixing was pretty awful a few years ago. |

it's more than that though. The DJ needs to be able to entertain, have charisma, and select tracks based on the mood of the night or what direction they want to take the crowd in.
A dance party with a pre-programmed jukebox (or laptop with a winamp playlist) up front wouldn't be as fun... though it could probably mix better than some of the djs out there :D |

I don't really think that is a valid comparison. There is at least some element of skill and individuality to a DJ set, whereas the analogies you have provided do not really contain any individuality or creativity. |

Exactly creativity... What do you think producing is about? |

If you want to hit it big you have to produce. Noone's gonna tour someone that just plays records anymore unless they own one of the big promotion organisations or are somehow connected to people who matter. As far as difficulty goes, it's much harder to produce a good track than play a good set imo.
Produce (hard work) -> DJ (the fun part as escee said) |

onion, i know your a producer so your missing my point a little in what i said. To use your analogy a dj is more like an "artist" who takes from the "paintings" of the orinal "artist" and makes something unique out of it, when done properly.
Im not taking anything away from producers,i have just started myself and know how incredibly difficult it is.
My point was that to many "good producers", make " dj's"
yet they get booked becuase they have some well known tracks.
eddie halliwell absolutely rocked it here last year.... top 20 in the world never having produced a tune, he is an example of what im saying.
The producers who try to dumb djing down to "it's just beat matching" are the ones that generally suck the most.
as i said, this is general comment, there will always be exceptions. |
