James Zabiela, no?
He has a few remixes including that awesome rmx of Virgin Souls - Personality but other than that zilch tunes of his own afaik.

Luke Chable - the antithesis of Zabiela?
Perfect example of a producer who's gone on to dj internationally through the strength of his productions alone. Despite the supposedly significant improvements he was said to have made, he sucked hard when I saw him at TT this year. Has little sense for crowd (playing 120bpm dreamy crap to an almost empty midnight room, Seaman subsequently packing the place out and lifting the roof).

u shoulda seen him on boxing day after foort *omgzIdie*

True producing your own tunes is harder than djing... but djing a decent set isnt as easy as most ppl would think....

Tune selection, keying your tracks, and having decent mixing skills takes a lot of practise and im sure alot of ppl out there wouldnt be able to do it if they tried day and night for months..

Its not for everyone, but i have to say the quality of many bar/club djs is pretty shocking...even the ones on radio r hopeless

..says the guy who thinks god listens to trance.

Zabiela has made one or 2 tracks under his own name. cant remember the names at present tho.

and why isnt a remix counted as a production?

True a remix is still a production but not exactly original though. Some remixes can sound almost like new tracks in themselves, guess it depends track by track.
A handful of original tracks and remixes hardly makes you "a producer" though IMO (even if Zabs has only been in the game for a short while). He's earned his rep almost completely due to his dj'ing and not his producing.
[Doing my research, he's done quite a few original tracks: Hearing Aid, Robophobia, Excited, Where the bears are, Zabielik Beats. But I don't believe any of them have been properly released (though I could be wrong again).]

I'll add the point that I think production work enables a dj to be more readily promoted. If ppl are familiar with a dj's production work then they'll expect his/her dj sets to be along similar lines. If the dj hasn't done any, then at best you'll have to use genre classifications. And genre classifications not only are inaccurate quite often but also can pigeon-hole djs to a style - an unfavourable outcome.
That said I'm still in favour of complete specialisation. I like dj's who make edits of tracks so that they fit into their sets/style but other than that no. The skill sets are different. Sure anyone can dj but there are only a select few who can make it into a true artform. If a top-notch dj (e.g. Oakey, Sasha, Digweed, Howells, Zabiela) is also good at producing then that really is co-incidental IMO.

some producers should really stay in the studio !

So who is the current best DJ then who has NEVER produced?

batemanscott
Its not about dj's never having produced, most do at some stage.

It's about those producers that have very little djing experience/talent doing dj tours and sucking at it.

Ah well then yes i agree.

There are waaay too many mediocre international DJs heading out this way, and Trance producers seem to be the main cause of this problem.
