Producers - How Do They Get Paid?

So i was driving today listening to a live set of Tiesto...and i heard Andy Hunter - Go.....now i asked myself does Andy Hunter get paid everytime Tiesto plays the track "Go" in his live shows?

If Andy Hunter doesnt get paid then how is downloading live sets illegal? Cus if Tiesto doesnt pay ANdy Hunter to play Go then where is the copyrights?

So do producers get paid everytime a DJ plays their tracks? I dont think they do..so then how do they make their money? Cus vinyl sales couldnt be that lucrative.

well clubs pay some kinda royalties to be aloud to have music played in clubs, but i doubt the artists see much of that.

other than that i suppose it depends on the way the contract is setup when they sign it. they might just get a flat amount or they might get a percentage of record sales or something like that...

basically there is a company called the prs that collects fees which are then shared between its members.

Tiesto doesn't pay people for playing their music, but the point is that they are getting payment in the form of advertisement. If he whores out their track, people are gonna want to buy it. And if you're just gonna download his set and separate it into 5 minute segments, then it's not like you really need to buy the track (unless you're a DJ and need it on vinyl-- OHH WAIT LOL DJS PLAY MP3S NOW LOL)

But yeah, I think downloading sets is illegal due to the company BROADCASTING the set, rather than the DJ playing the set. It's them that do the paying.

i've wondered a variation of the same thing: can you make an actual living (i.e. support a family/buy a house) solely as a solid and serviceable (but non-mega star) producer/remixer?

i remember reading a thread a long time time ago where elevation talked about his financial experience as a young producer and it was very sobering.

the bigger bucks seem to be in touring/dj-ing which would explain why more producers have embraced dj-ing.

I really dont think big DJs like Tiesto, PVD, Oakie etc actually "pay" for any vinyls. I am sure producers want them to play their tracks...especially lesser known producers.

So since they dont pay for the vinyl but play it for a profit...how is that anymore legal then downloading and playing a live set at home that u found on the net?

Hypocricy? Seem to be.

Someone mentioned exposure/advertisement for the producers everytime their track is played by a big DJ.....but in reality 95% of the people in the clubs would never buy a vinyl of a particular track...so where is the incentive? To think u are going to make it big when u are only targeting a very small demographic (5%) seems pointless...so then it begs the question....do most producers make tracks for the money? or for the feeling knowing their tracks are being played by the number one DJs of the time?
