Didn't they give Bobby Holik 10 million a season a few years ago? Highest payroll = missed playoffs time and again.

sather was under orders from dolan to get to the playoffs now instead of rebuilding, so sather pretty much aimed his sights and overpaid all these name brand stars

after all these losing seasons, sather finally convinced dolan to rebuild from scratch

man I hate that tard James Dolan :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip:

Smitty my man you got to realize no matter who or how crappey the teams are in canada they will have fans for them. America is a different story, lets be honest now Rangers or any American team would be better off with him than a Canadian team, I know the Canadians want to see him on a Canada based team but its better for the NHL if he played in America.

Also Vern if i see u this year at the Garden or the Collesieum its oN LIKE DONKEY KONG BITCH ALL THE LAWLER DISSES COMIN OUT!!!!

I don't see your reasoning here. All teams can only spend the same amount now so it doesn't matter where he plays considering that angle. And the teams in Canada AREN'T crappy...5 of 6 Canadian franchises have made it to the playoffs on average the last 4 seasons. They've been managed well even though they (save Toronto) have had financial difficulties.

If the Canadian teams are always crappy and are deprived of stars to go "help or save" hockey in some US town where it does not belong, that is bad for the game. If Montreal and Toronto are crap year in year out, people will stop going. It's like saying the Yankees will always do well even if they're subpar and I don't buy that....not for any prolonged tenure at the bottom anyway. You cannot assume Canadian support will always be there...Bettman realised that in the late 90s when most Canadian teams were crap and hockey overall as a result started to decline. The NHL will never survive without competitive Canadian franchises.

I honestly do not see how it's BETTER for the NHL for Crosby to play in the USA. Why does the NHL feel the constant need to waste resources pushing hockey on Americans who simply do not care? That's a huge reason why the lockout lasted 10 months in the first place, not because of "greedy" players. Keep it in the markets where it belongs, and that includes at least 16 American cities I can name right away. Carolina are struggling to get bodies in the seats, yet Winnipeg has a brand new 20,000 seat arena and are begging for a team. Now that there's a cap, let them have one!

1. First I ment crappy in terms of how bad of a season the team could have they would have fans:rolleyes:

2.I semi-agree with you about the teams in America. They should've done this in the lockout:

Ditch these teams:
Carolina, Phoenix. Anaheim, Nashville, Atlanta, Tampa Bay,

Give these cities a team:
Hartford (one of the most popular teams), Winnepeg, another city in Quebec, some city in North Dakota(hockeys huge there), a city in Alaska.

What teams would you dump Smitty. I have a good argument for the teams I didnt select.:toocool:
Dj Smitty20
All of those you mentioned for sure need to go. I'd say Florida and possibly the LA Kings could fold as well, as could Dallas....but at least the Kings and Stars have somewhat of a following.

Winnipeg definitely deserve a team and the only reason Quebec lost theirs after 95 was because of the US dollar and the race to expand in the USA. I'd like to see the Hartford Whalers return too and even Hamilton could probably support a team with proper ownership...not sure about Alaska...that's pretty remote.

Too many teams is only one issue....look at what they might do to the game itself now. Shootouts to decide games? Ties (or draws) have been around for 100 years...if American audiences can't handle seeing a well fought draw, they shouldn't bother showing up. Winning the game this way is stupid and defeats the team aspect of the sport. (same argument in soccer, but they only use those out of necessity). The bigger nets are simply retarded...and this blue ice, orange lines concept they tried in the AHL so Americans can follow the puck better? That's worse than Fox's flashing puck in the mid 90s! It's almost like the NHL assumes American audiences are stupid and can't follow the game and that is just ridiculous. New Yorkers, people from Philly, Minnesota, Michigan, etc know the damn game. People in Florida and Tennessee do not. It just drives me crazy.
drufrumvancity
I agree teams in the southern US need to fold but Hartford can kiss my ass bout gettin another team..... same with Dakota.... Id hate for shootouts to finish up games too... and the new net designs are very very retarded... I duno what to think about Crosby....him going to a small markety team in the US would deffintly help promote hockey in the US and it would most likely ease the pressure off him a bit but just imagine all the peope,k he'd put in the seats if he played in Canada :eyespop: go wings :D

CyberneticAngel
Why on earth would you want to fold Atlanta? As a city built mostly on transplants it remains one of the few vibrant hockey markets south of the Mason Dixon line. With the impending emergence of the Thrashers young stars the team is going to attract fans.
InterMilan31
Smitty some florida guy earlier in the thread said people go to the games thats why I didnt include them. Dallas can stay they get good attendance same with the Kings.

Reasons for Alaska: #1 sport is hockey, Juneoa or whatever is a pretty big city and no teams up there so it would attract.

Dakotas: Basing this on college hockey, huge sport there just like in Minnesota and Michigan if you could find a town with more than 5 people put a team there it would be better than Carolina lol.

dru why the hate for Hartford? Ever since they left its left a gap in Connecticut recently they made the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Hartford Wolf Pack in. 2 AHL teams and they are the biggest draws in all of Connecticut. Every game is sold out and its like huge news. I say every state in the North East should have a hockey team. Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont. Smitty would agree everyone watches hockey here.

Atlanta lets be serious. Well Atlanta deserves a team more than in Nashville

Smitty ur right though about that. From Philly on up the Northeast knows its hockey. North mid-west does too. Canada of course. A little bit in LA and of course Denver. The NHL should have placed AHL teams in the south and desert and seen how they did before giving them teams. Oh well contraction doesnt look like its happening so this is a dead issue.
