Miami's Power 96 Launches HD Dance Station
July 26, 2005
By Ken Tucker, Billboard Radio Monitor

WPOW-FM, Beasley Broadcast Group’s Rhythmic Top 40 station in Miami is the latest station—and the first in Miami—to utilize HD Radio multicast technology to add a second station to its programming offerings.

HD-2 is Power’s new sister dance music station and will feature music from Tiesto, Juliet, Deep Dish, Chemical Brothers and 4 Strings, among others. The channel will also include dance remixes of top 40 records.

“There has always been insatiable demand in Miami for pure dance music,” said Ira Wolf, (a.k.a. Tony the Tiger), interim program director for WPOW, in a release.

“Power 96 has always been on the cutting edge musically, and now we are broadcasting the first multicast HD Radio station airing in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area, propelling us to the vanguard of this exciting new era in radio,” added Greg Reed, vp and general manager for WPOW.

The commercial-free, subscription-free, all music channel is being programmed by Power and Italian company Radio 105 Network.

In May, Infinity Broadcasting became the first commercial broadcaster to launch an HD multicast station on WUSN-FM, its Country station in Chicago, followed by its sister station WJMK-FM in the market. The other broadcaster to jump on board the multicast trend is Capitol Broadcasting’s WRAL-FM in Raleigh, N.C.

HD radio sucks... it broadcasts at 96kbps on FM (that's the bitrate of a ty mp3)... 931's doing the same thing to on their frequency... this doesn't sound like any respect for dance music, more like an industry "boohoo we feel bad that you lost your dance station, so to make up for it let's put it on some low quality crap streaming radio"... kinda like how party 931 became an all internet station. It's not like us fans don't notice here... and also party 931's playlist has managed to get worse since it left. Seriously you industry wanks ed up dance music already, it's best you leave us alone in the underground.

dance music was better off as a traffic jam show on power96 (and good, underground club and radio broadcasts at night), not to have its own station.. because that's when you really screw things up, by repeating the same old tracks and garbage freestyle over and over again.

"931's doing the same thing to on their frequency"

931 is an INTERNET RADIO STATION. Big difference from HD Radio.

"this doesn't sound like any respect for dance music"

Ok.. whatever. At least they are trying something. How many dance stations are there in the U.S.? Four? and you are saying that by them trying to do something with dance is no respect for dance music? You make no sense.

And by the way, Party is streaming at 20k... not 96k - Big Difference.

If you live in Miami, at least try to support it.

No party 931 said they were going to rebroadcast their station over high-definition radio, in time... right now they're just an internet station.

Of course it is no respect for dance music, at least as far as real dance music is concerned, Party 931 made dance music look like gay, old people music by overly playing on the "gay supporting" (look I'm not a gay basher, but if you're going to have gay support, start a new ing AM gay talk radio station and leave the gays out of a non-sexually orientated music station.... that's like broadcasting religious agenda on a station that wasn't meant to be religious) and the same old freestyle tracks (saying that dance music is an old fogey's genre)... seriously they ed up dance music's reputation... and having another one will just do the same . You industry hogs are no help. You just want to elevate your ty hiphop music, but backlash dance music.

You hit it right there man. Party really f-d up dance music in Miami and all of the U.S. because the other radio companies were watching that station... just in case it did take off.

Party played the same freestyle .. bubblegum trance.. and gay circuit songs and never connected with their large listener base.

A dance station obviouslly has to play some top 40 to connect to the mainstream crowd... but Party went at it the wrong way.

I think by Power releasing this announcemt that it could be the first step in getting dance music back on the radio dials in south fl.

Forgive my ignorance but...
do you have to pay for HD radio?
Is that satellite as in Sirius or any of those other services?

I just wanna know since I am not familiar with this. :D

www.wikipedia.org there's a good HD radio article on there

yeah you have to buy a receiver, it's digital audio streaming at 96kbps at FM and 24kbps at AM, and all the signal will be digified... meaning you'll still get the same ty 96k quality from hearing a regular FM station... as far as I'm concerned HD radio sounds like it's going to be a flop, if it doesn't upgrade its quality to at least 192kbps.

These ty dance stations have got to stop. Put dance music where it belongs... in the clubs and underground, and occasionally on mixshows for top40 radios and underground shows at night. Yeah dance stations start alright... I'm sure this power 96 sister one will sound pretty straight once it gets on the air, but as soon as corperate America gets their hands on it, it will become something so ty it only appeals to 11-year-old jits... I mean look at power96, they used to be good, now they're so pathetic, you hear calls coming in for Al B Sylk repping class of 2011... power96 might as well change its ing name to Sesame Street radio. Power96 WAS on the cutting edge, now their edge just got cut.

Its a new technology that broke out... and i believe all newer model cars are HD equipped- Its a free service and its a way for FM stations to somehow stay competetive with Satellite Radio.

Before you know it, every station in Miami will have 2 stations with all sorts of different formats. It probably wont get big for at least a year, but if you have a newer car you can listen to it for free and no subscription.
