| I don't really aks "How are you" much. Just "What's up" or "How's it going". And usually if people ask me how i am and i'm in a bad mood i'll answer with "meh" lol. I can't be bothered to say "fine" when it's really not true but i don't want to go all out and say "I'm PMSing, everything pisses me off and i want you to die". :tongue2 LOL |

Look everyone,
Its your civic duty to respond with "Good Thanks"
Nothing is worse than asking coworkers or strangers how they are and they go into some life story about how they popped their knee cap and needed surgery or how their dog died because of whatever reason.
If your upset about something, im sure we all have our inner circle of friends we can talk to about our problems. No matter what, whenever someone asks me how im doing, i always respond "good thanks, yourself?"
Asking someone how they are doesnt necessarily mean you care how they are, you are just being polite. |

but what is the point of it other than being polite? none! waste of time!
From: http://www.answers.com/how+are+you&r=67
| quote: |
A conventional greeting used mostly after being introduced to someone, as in And this is our youngest—say “How do you do” to Mr. Smith. Although it is a question, it requires no reply. Originally, in the 1600s, this expression was an inquiry after a person's health or standing, how do you do meaning “how do you fare?” Today we usually express this as How are you? or How are you doing? or How goes it? or How's it going? Even more general are the slangy locutions How are things? or How's tricks? All of these greetings date from the first half of the 1900s.

See! no point what so ever, just to be polite... In the 1900s people had time for this nonsense, It's 2005!!, this is no longer the case so I propose we change this useless fake greeting ritual and just nod our heads

No, what really gets me is when people ask "how are you?" when they dont really give a rats ass how you are. It's just a formality/tradition .. fake concern. |
I think it's good that people are courteous and make polite conversation, even if they're busy or preoccupied with their own thoughts. Simple things like hi/how are you, please, thank you, etc. are important - they may be trite but they oil the gears of human interaction.
However, common courtesy also dictates that you listen for an answer. Some people don't - I'll respond with "I'm fine, how are you doing?" and hear complete silence on the other end while they resume walking/working/whatever. That's where I draw the line between politeness and phoniness.
If you are going to strike up a dialogue with someone, now matter how small or unimportant, at least have the tact to acknowledge the other person's words. |
