I disagree. If you know that the person on the other end is quite busy and has no real interest in your answer, then I would say it is simply being polite not to ramble on and on about how ty your day was. I'm not talking about lying to close friends when they ask "no, really, what's the matter?" When you're dealing with people whom you have largely superficial relationships with, it's simply inappropriate to start filing all your grievances with them.
There is openness and then there is TMI. It's usually fairly easy to tell when people are taking a sincere interest in what you have to say - and while I try my best to let others know I have a sincere interest in what they have to say, it is not my place to try and force others to take a sincere interest in me. |

No, what really gets me is when people ask "how are you?" when they dont really give a rats ass how you are. It's just a formality/tradition .. fake concern.
I'm sitting at work, people walk by my work station and ask how i am. Do they really care how I am? Really? No they don't. Like .. piss off, stop wasting my time with the small talk! .. That's why most of the time I don't ask either unless I can see they might really not be "fine". I prefer a "what are you up to" or "what's up". Unless you are a close friend or family member, I know you really don't care so save the how are you!!! lol.. |
yeah, that s me off...well, generally when people ask how i am, then i'm in the middle of responding and they cut me off. you!!!! i didn't even want to answer your bloody stupid question, i was only doing it to be polite, and then you interrupt?!!? whatever! granted, i really only found that happened when i used to work in retail *shudder*.
and, i am in a good mood today although one may not think so after reading above comment. ;) |

If you are going to strike up a dialogue with someone, now matter how small or unimportant, at least have the tact to acknowledge the other person's words. |
exactly!!
I hate when people ask and then talk right over you as you are responding or keep walking :whip: |

How about when people ask "What's new" or "What've you been up to"
and ppl ALWAYS say "Oh, nothing"... but then will go on to explain what they did today or last week or even last month, etc.
I find it amusing, because you say "nothing" and then expand and go into detail of something you did.. which was NOT nothing! LOL... it's just a strange idiosyncrasy that most ppl tend to have... I do it myself. Not sure why, but I inevitably do it as well.

^ force of habit i guess (re: jem)
but whats more annoying is when you ask someone you havent seen in a while that same question and they ALWAYS answer with 'not too much'.. and no, they don't go on to explain after.. they just stop there. i'm left to think, wow you're so uninteresting and really need to grow a personality. then they wonder why we're not better friends... i realise i'm referring to personal experiences now and not generalizing anymore.. but maybe someone else can relate
SOME PEOPLE EH :p ... i'm sure we could go on for days pointing out little annoyances in our social interactions................. and we will, cause its fun |

LOL, some of you guys are really picky about how other people choose to converse!
There is really no justification for getting mad at people for giving trite responses like "I'm good" or "nothing much". If you're seriously interested in their life, then ask directed questions! Just because someone else has chosen not to steer the conversation in any particular direction does not mean *you* can't take the initiative and do it.
And what's the worst that can happen if you ask a few directed questions and still get one word answers? I suppose you've wasted 10 seconds of your precious time? Close it with "good to see you again" and move on? Maybe they had a day and they're still sorting it all out in their head. Maybe they're drunk as a skunk. Maybe they've been looking for someone all night and they're frustrated. Who knows? Don't make assumptions! |

Let it be noted i dont care one way or the other if ppl say "nothing" when u ask whuts new...
i was merely drawing attention to a response that amused me and I felt like mentioning said common idiosyncrasy here. ;)
