some of my favorite books...
The Catcher In The Rye, by J.D. Salinger
Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card
Layer Cake, by Daniel Craig (probably the best book i've read in the last year)
The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini
Life of Pi, by Yann Martel
A Walk In The Woods, by Bill Bryson
Glamorama, by Bret Easton Ellis
The Rules of Attraction, by Bret Easton Ellis
Running With Scissors, by Augusten Burroughs
Blindness, by Jose Saramago
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey
The Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka (not really a book but i ing love it)
A Million Little Pieces, by James Frey
Slackjaw, by Jim Knipfel
An Unquiet Mind, by Kay Redfield Jamison
i'm a sucker for memoirs written by people who suffer from drug abuse, alcoholism, or psychological issues... even though most of the time they're pretty predictable and written in that "oh look at me i'm locked up with all these insane people and i'm not really insane!" attitude.
i'm currently reading The Confessions of Max Tivoli, by Andrew Sean Greer... but it hasn't quite sucked me in yet |

i like Border's better because you can check their inventory online... but B&N is closer to my work/home.
but when shopping for books that aren't new releases, Downtown Books, the used book store in downtown Milwaukee, beats everything. the place is insane... from the front it just looks like a hole in the wall, but you walk in and it's 4 floors and soooo many different rooms. i can spend hours in that place.
i <3 bookstores :D |

oh! edit: Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser --> FTW!
basically it's a part 2 upton sinclair's 'the jungle'... all about today's meat packing industry... and slaughterhouse workers, the most dangerous job in america and how only mega fast food corps can make the necessary changes to make it more sanitary and safe for the workers and people who eat meat and fast food. |

Nausea by Jean Paul Sartre. I don't know what existentialism is but I guess I'll find out.
Lucid, I just bought my mom "A Million Little Pieces." I remember you mentioning it long before Oprah got her greasy hands on it. |

How was Lunar Park? I've read some of his other stuff (Less than Zero, American Psycho), but reviews have been mixed about the new one.

His next book, Reefer Madness, is good, too. It's 3 parts dealing with black market industries: Drug trading, porn, and illegal immigrants working strawberry farms.
As for some of mine that I haven't seen listed already:
Battle Royale by Takami
Cocaine Nights by J.G. Ballard (author of Crash, the one about sexual arousal from crashes that was made into a movie probably 10 years ago, not the racism book on Oprah's list)
Anything by Hunter S. Thompson
Tom Wolfe - Electric Kool Aid Acid Test (I have Charlotte Simmons and Bonfire of the Vanities, but haven't gotten to reading them yet)
One of my majors in college was American Studies, so I got exposed to a lot of good non-fiction like what's listed above. |

| ^ I've heard the motives of Cocaine Nights are what originally paved the way to Fight Club, that Ballard was really the innovator. |

i haven't even finished it yet... it hasn't really hooked me in like his other books. it's good, and i know i have to wait until i finish it to really form an opinion on it, but so far it just seems kind of predictable and phony.
it is very interesting though how it's written as a semi-memoir (it's based on his life and it's written from the point of view of Bret Easton Ellis, but it's fiction)... the first couple chapters really give you a lot of insight on his older books.
i would definitely recommend checking it out if you've read his other books, especially American Psycho. |

autobiography of Malcolm X... first half of the book is of him as a pimp/drug dealer. 2nd half is the spiritual stuff |
