Definitely a lot of similar themes, especially how crime, while despised by the public, creates a sense of excitement that makes life worth living. Otherwise, people get too complacent in their boredom.
I also forgot Aldous Huxley's Brave New World in my original post. |

I can definately see that to be plausible.
I miss my the hard, hard palpating my of heart when my best friends and I were throwing objects at moving cars, shoplifting, nigroid knocking, initiating fights, throwing basketballs at the neighbors window at 2 AM because he was a "dork," or falsely alarming cops.
haha ok really it's :stongue: :stongue: Although it was terrible. I'm sure it created some sort of awakening stir in the victims lives as well... :haha: Somehow, certainly, these actions truly united us.
I'll pick that book up. :toothless |

Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown
Angel & Demons - Dan Brown
Children of the Matrix - David Icke
That last one I'm currently reading. Very interesting:
This guy claims that civilisation had begun originally with
Atlantis & Lemuria, that the Great Flood was probably created
by advanced aliens who had cross-bred with humans, and saw
all the terrible deformations and decided to wipe out humanity
and start from scratch. A lot of history buffs dig it 'cos it has a lot of research from Sumeria & early Egypt.
Also he goes on saying that Atlantis & Lemuria were aliens thought
to be Gods due to their advanced technology & skillful use of magnetic fields (therefore able to create the Great Pyramids & Stonehenge)
Wicked.

Sorry. I know you didn't even as for my opinion :stongue: but I change my mind. Why crime? For some, they may be displaced of boredom by merely sweeping the carpet, catching fireflies or even masturabation. I think you could replace crime with just a hobby in general, as a means of distraction from your 9 - 5 job, making dinner, drawing a bath and going to bed. Yeah, I think just a general distraction serves. Or just being a mere adrenaline junkie. But ahhhhhhhhh I see. Because those actions I've just mentioned aren't affecting the lives of others. Yeah well. A "Hope you feel better" card maintains the same interaction as if that card was replaced with a burglary. Don't ya think? But. The burglary would be more fun. Yes? However, I'm sure thats not the point. OK, I don't know. You've just witnessed a whole stream of my mental process. |

Wow, you just confused me. I wasn't saying that I supported the whole concept, but I'm saying that's part of what I got from the book. I realize that there's all of these other things that can serve as a distraction, but sending a card isn't really what they're talking about. It's more about how the effects of the criminal actions make others feel alive (kind of like Project Mayhem in Fight Club, I guess, especially that scene in the movie with the convenience store clerk where they threaten to shoot him if he doesn't go back to school). Hypothetically speaking, as it's never happened to me, it's similar to how when your home gets burglarized, you appreciate what you lost more than when you had it, as well as what you still have left. I actually think the burglary example is used in Cocaine Nights.
I'd just recommend reading the book, though, as I can't really explain it, especially since it's been awhile since I read it. It's not that long (maybe 300 pages??) It definitely made some degree of sense to me when I read it at the time. The community that it's set in is a beach resort community in Spain that's really dead in the start. Eventually, a few people make it their project to liven the place up and crime, drugs, pornography, etc. are the ways that they do it and it seems to work, but definitely has its negative effects. |
