When stated as a "choice," I just automatically thought.. "hmmm.. which do I do first? Take out the garbage or pay the water bill?" It's probably the age... yet again. But choice? At least use a different world that I didn't know and wouldn't run to the dictionary and look up.. so then I could add whatever postive connotations my naive mind thought of. :stongue: I'm still thinking it's instinctual yes, but pulled all together by some higher _______ in a vast scheme of things that we would never know. i don't think it's possible to define love with words. i've tried, many times, and everytime it comes out sounding just so weak and doesn't correctly represent what i feel in my heart and in my head.
i guess the best way i can describe the way i feel about love is to compare it to a song that you just absolutely can't stop listening to. you hear the song and it just gives you chills, puts a smile on your face, and makes you want to dance... you can't explain why the song makes you feel that way, or what elements make it so good, you just feel it and you know it.
but i also think it goes much much deeper than that. the aspect of love that i cannot put into words is the aspect which keeps you with someone for life... i'm still pretty young and i think i'm still trying to grasp the concept of "til death do us part". i think this is where it starts to become a choice rather than just a feeling. you can fall in love with someone and be happy, but you have to choose to keep things that way. relationships take work, whether you've been in it for 1 year, 5 years, or 20+ years.
i also think that love is infinite and growing. i believe in the concept that when you are with a person you are meant to be with, you will fall deeper and deeper in love with them over time. falling in love with your partner all over again is what will keep you together.
btw i didn't expect this thread to go off topic into this discussion, but i am enjoying it! :) |

That was the theme of the homily the priest gave at my wedding. He was building off of First Corinthians and more or less tore John a new for his lame attempt to try and describe love. Not that the scripture does a bad job but that it endevors to define love by what it does and what it is not. Fr. Jim's contention is that love is something that can only be felt, no one knows love unless they experience it. |
