3 years back to back - that's the problem - most people could agree that he owned 2002 trancewise...maybe even 2003 (tho I would have said Ferry Corsten) but 2004 too....that is how you know that someone has become commercialized - because those that pride ourselves for being "so called" underground hopped off the Tiesto bandwagon a while ago - but a whole lot of new trancecrackers jumped on and they keep jumping on in massive numbers......

a very good point.
anyone who listed is at the top for that long will have their critics. Ask Madonna, Michael Jackson, etc. They made it big due to talent, hard work, and bringing something new to the music scene...but once they were on top for a while, the criticisms continued to mount. You're a "fag" if you liked either of them...or they were too commercial...whatever. Anyone perceived to be at the top of their profession will have people who want to knock them down. |

Dear "Tye-gess"
You have a very big head. Too big for such a skinny body.
I interviewed you some time ago, and my intern was very excited to meet you. You were uninterested, and kind of rude, although you did sign his vinyl.
When the cameras came on, though, you smiled big for them. You have a big, plastic smile.
These thoughts are the thoughts that stay with me about you. I think Flight 643 sounds kind of like Flight of the Bumblebee.
Yours truly,

Once again u make music come off as an industry. No wonder tiesto is so big with people like u that pretend to know and like this "industry".
Music is a work of art. Art touches the senses and im sorry but news to u is that tiesto lacks any shred of it.

the only reason i care about this industry is for my personal entertainment... i dont think i would like to be referred to as the Mr know it all in the trance industry cuz quite frankly i think i could try doing better things with my life so at the moment il just stick to the djs im sure to have a good time at
and by saying music is a work of art and not an industry i do hope you dont mean that all the djs should be in it for the sole purpose of giving you an aesthetic earful rather than make big moolah .... |

um...no. you missed the point.
it's only in the past year or two that "trance" has really entered the mainstream. Top 40 stations here were NOT playing anything even resembling trance. Some really bad euro, sure. None of those DJs listed were ever asked to DJ the Olympic Games either.
my point is that because "trance" has become increasingly popular, any DJ who now is "#1" will likely be subject to the criticisms that Tiesto is facing right now. |
Actually I think he was spot on.
You can delude yourself into believing otherwise all you want, but there is precious little difference between the popular trance today and the Euro music that our radio stations have been playing for years. That's why we're actually hearing unedited trance tracks on those stations.
I think it is you that's missing the point. You think that the public here has gradually become more accepting of trance and electronic music, but what's actually happened is that trance (that is, the trance played by Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, etc.) has been undergoing a transformation and becoming more and more like the pop music and Euro that the masses already listen to.
THAT is why so many of us hate it. Yes, this attitude may correlate with the genre's increasing popularity but it is not CAUSED by that popularity. In reality, the increasing popularity AND the distaste from those "in the know" are BOTH effects of the genre's mutation.
It's not commercial success that any of us care about. Moby's tracks have been used for dozens of TV commercials, but none of us hate him. BT produced for N'Sync and probably made more money from that than any of these trance DJs did - but we don't hate him either. Sasha is WAY more popular than any of these guys and has been for years, both in Europe and North America - but he's not hated either here OR there. There are TONS of examples to counter your gross generalization.
| quote: | | If you don't think that some people dislike him for the very fact that he is popular, you're terribly naive. There are quite a few people on here who call Armin and PVD "cheese", for example...and who think Oakenfold is a pale shadown of what he once was. |
And presumably you disagree with these statements? I don't think many people refer to PvD as cheese, but Tiesto, Armin, Rank 1, Ferry Corsten, etc. etc...
SOME PEOPLE may hate because it's cool to hate the mainstream, and I think that's pathetic, but it makes me equally sick to see the fans accuse EVERYONE who hates them of being a poser. It may make some of you feel better to think that way, but it makes you *look* stupid. |

meh...I just deleted a massive reply...I don't really care that much, lol.
I don't care for Tiesto much anymore either...I skipped his last appaerance, spent 3/4 of his previous one on the patio, and likely will never go hear him again, due to the relatively unexciting set and rammed crowd that will be there.
I just don't think he's THAT bad of a DJ that he deserves the bashing he gets around here and I DO think that many people here who bash him are bashing him because of his long running "#1" status. |

i bash him because to me he has always represented the commercial side of dance music. Even back in 99, synthy trance was not much better than euro. In fact even back then i used to call it "euro without the vocals".
but if people like that then thats great, i just hate it when people walk around dissing those who listen to pop music yet insist that tiesto is the . |

Exactly. If people like it then that's fine, they're entitled to their opinion, but I don't need to listen to their theories about why I dislike it. I *know* why I dislike it - it's for that exact reason. |

diginut and jay thats not fair and you know it.
If you call tiesto eurodance from 2000 then EVERY SINGLE TRANCE DJ falls into the same category including pvd.
They all shared familiar tracks in there sets so they are all guilty.
PVD Definately played cheesy trance just like the dutch guys and just like paul oakenfold.
Can you really say tiesto in 2000 was euro dance?
Wintergalatic, Magik 6, In search of sunrise 2... This IMO Was the best quality of trance music i have ever heard from him. |

i agree.. and all trance back then to me sounded like euro.
But its the tiesto supporters that are the most in your face about how underground he is/was and how cool they are because they listen to tiesto and their silly classmates listen to pop music. To me its all the same. Always has been and always will be. I dont mind tiesto being around. I just wish his fans would stop trying to ride the high horse. |

I can't recall anyone on this board claiming he is/was "underground".
that would certainly be kind of ridiculous though, if they did. |

All I can infer from that statement is that you haven't heard much trance from before 1999-2000.
Pick up a set or CD from Christopher Lawrence - whether you like it or not, that is indicative of what trance *really is* (or was, before it got commercialized). Especially if you can get some of his older stuff like "rise", which had tracks from X-Cabs, De Niro, Transa, etc. |
