On the topic of Sasha...

I'm listening to Sasha live @ Glastonbury 2003. One of the BEST SETS I have ever heard from him so far. His GU 13 Ibiza is my favorite GU and perhaps my favorite comp ever.

So what's going on? I've seen Sasha in person only three times in my life but it seems he always plays so dark and [don't quite know the word for it] now. In this Glastonbury set there are so many funky lyrics, funked up basslines, changes of tempo, unexpected surprises. Granted, he's still THE master of technique and adding effects, the master of Ableton after all, sure, but... there's something missing perhaps? Zabs is so young and fresh, it's a stark contrast, like experienced, life-worn father and naive son. Sasha's always got these dark eyes and no smile. It makes me sad. :conf:

His sets sound dark dark dark to me, almost angry or brooding in a way (though I always danced my ass off to them and had the best time) And he always looks so tired. :( Sasha... come back to life!

you need so see Sasha more often I think! I saw him 3 times at Crobar this year and once here in Boston, and each set was filled with amazing melodies, basslines and lyrics. Hes always jumping around and smiling too lately ... mabye we're thinking of different Sashas?

p.s. - check out his set from Aria Montreal from this summer, its unreal.

I'm thinking Sasha, like many of us, just suffers from a tormented soul.

Mix one part pain and three parts creative genious and you get somber atmospherics of empyrean proportions.

Yeah, he was pretty animated when he came to Sonar a few months back.

I enjoy the diversity.

haha i'll admit it, i'm a sasha whore...

GU 13 CD1&2 GENIOUS!

SnD @ Renaissance (DOPEST SET) - bliss pm me with ur aim name and i'll tell you how to grab it from me.

Airdrawndagger - what more can I say? This man is and always will be ahead of the music and the scene.

Another one of my favorites is
Sasha live on Thump Radio SF (bliss you can have also if you want)

There is also a diversified portfolio set he did which I think is a rip from renaissance set - still great nonetheless.

sal/trunks just hit me with a lush portrush set which I've been whoring all morning as well.

Sasha broke me at twilo in 2000. i've been hooked since.
back in 02-03ish I went to see him at Buzzlife @ Nations, another insane night.

So like yea, I consider sasha my number 1 of all time. Hands Down!

Sorry I think the electro stuff he plays now is starting to be ..... The stuff has been arround a long time and now that hes playing it everyone thinks its new, which its not. God knows I love sasha, but sasha + ableton = joke.....

Listen to his essential mix with ableton(one of the most horrid essential mixes ive heard) He uses the meat katie - flashdance drum loop for the better part of 30min and a loop taking right from way out west anything but you for the better part of 45min. If playing a drumloop over a track is called innovation then i just learned something new...

eek sorry my technical ear nor experience doesn't allow me to analyze such but thanks for the input i'll try to remember that next time i listen to his recent sets. and if you noticed most of my reviews were about sets pre-abelton, i'll actually give lush, portrush another go around and try to see if i'm able to distinguish music the way you analyze it, i might be unable to do so since I lack the production experience but hey, i get to learn something every day.

maybe you have some tutorials or web resources i can use to read up on such, i'm interested in your technical ear!

i love sasha.. unfortunately the first time i saw him live i wasnt that much into EDM and was also incredibly intoxicated at Webster Whore lol

Ok the anything but you loop comes in at 1:13 in the essential mix.... Listen to Way Out West - Anything But you then listen to the sasha set at the point.. The meat katie loop is at about 10min either loop runs for 30min + The way out west loop is really noticable as it has a very unique drum roll....
