Gatecrasher

Hi Guys,
I dont mean to just emerge from nowhere with a thread that no doubt probaby existed quite some years ago (since ive been living under a progressive house rock)... but Gatecrasher... I lost touch with it after the 3cd compilation by the name of Experience really disappointed me (and im sure many will agree that the Wet and Discotheque days were the best)
I've never actually been to the club itself since I'm in Australia... but it's been a goal I've set for myself since i was 15 (now 20) to one day go there and mingle with a crowd and a place that was what i percieved as a place thats all about the music... but a while ago while i was at work, i went to the website to find that, wow... it was revamped, and they spend 1.5mil on the club... sounded exciting... but then i saw the new lineup of nights, to find that the saturday night consisted of RnB and HipHop.... ARE YOU KIDDING?
This makes me sick beyond all belief that a culture that i lived and breathed (and even at one point wanted the lion tattoed on my arm) has completely turned on me becuase apparently the lion is no longer about the music (or was it ever?).. its about the revenue and how many people they can get on the dancefloor... I understand that quite sometime ago, stupid laws were set in, in UK about repetative music, and i heard that the club was shut down numerous times over the drugs... but what can i say... the lion has lowered itself right in with the mainstream... its no longer unique... its evil! it really disappoints me that it turned to playing the worst genre on the planet...
so, everyone, without finding some reason to 'flame' me, bring me in to 2005 and beyond with trance music and tell me what i should be looking forward to when i decide to go to UK within the next few years...
thanks! |

oh... i missed the bit about trance in the charts... must be that crack wearing off... :tongue2 j/k
you know what... i prefer trance to stay underground... aren't we all proud of the underground? this way, the people who want to actually hear the music will be the only ones that know about it... and not just every tom dick and harry... |

well trance went really badly cheese in germany. alot of producers such as Talla 2XLC, Fridge, Dogma etc went to do eurocheese. Those with dignity either quit or started doing other stuff.
Holland today is more about lousy hardstyle than trance. |

well, you either listen to the ol'skool style you like (meaning dig up your old cds) or you get with the times and start listening to the latest styles.
trance as you once knew it has evolved, for better or worse. |

and James Zabiela is a damn good example (although i wouldnt consider him to play Trance...)
Alive was fantastic... what do you think of Utilities? I don't like it as much but it's growing on me... i guess it's becuase nothing can top Jeff Bennett's Strange Item at the end of the first CD (of alive that is)... that whole cd is worth listening to, just to let it climax to that track...
anyway... i know it's evolving, but its tracks like Thomas Datt's Alone, and Danjo and Styles, Passiva etc that make me believe that classic trance is still around... im just not looking hard enough... |

JZ isn't trance, but in a weird kind of way trance led me to him (and other EDM) so that's a good thing. As for Utilities, I liked disc 1 after a few hearings but I'll need to listen to disc 2 again sometime. Get hold of his promotional mixes Four.2 (5 mixes). They're awesome, imo.

You did not just compare those three tracks to the likes of Greece 2000, 1998, Madagascar, Age of Love, Ayla, etc. did you? ;) |

Now don't hold me to this as I've not been going to clubs for quite some time, but it may be worth you checking out Passion at the Emporium. It once rivalled Gatecrasher yet never over-promoted itself and stayed the right side of mainstream, if you know what I mean. The club was smaller too and had a more homely feel to it, helped along by the incredible JFK.
I don't want to say too much more as I don't want to give you any false hope of a good night but if your coming over to the UK anyway it may be worth checking this place out, maybe this could prompt someone to shed some more light on how they're doing nowadays.
But anyway, Gatecrasher has gone the same way as Cream did, a lesson in how to rise to the top and then destroy yourself, in one foul swoop.
