Lets just see how well our municipalities, provinces and country do if all the services they provide are stopped and the tax money used to fund those services are given back to us. It will then be up to us as citizens to make sure these things get done. There would be total caos if this was done.
I agree that all levels of government spend money in ways they shouldn't and they will never please 100% of us. We do however have to pay taxes and let them run all the services we enjoy so we can enjoy our lives. We all have a say in which party runs the different governments and by voting we have our say. If we feel strongly enough about a subject then we do have our outlets and more of us should use them. |

Well that is where you are wrong. When the ontario liberals took over the debt was over 5 billion dollars and they have reduced it to under 3 billion. That being said...I did get the numbers from the liberal party and I am sure you will say it is all magical book keeping but lets remember...every party has magical books. |
even if the magic number is somewhere in the middle which it probably is, I still say that the liberals have no excuse for a deficit after the gigantic tax hikes we have experienced.
When the liberals came in our deficit went up as did our taxes. So where did all that money go? |

the feds arent really doing this. They are playing a shell game with the surplus They have been under reporting the surplus and then SURPRISE! guess what? we taxed you more than we thought!
100% of the surplus should go to paying the debt instead of using some of it to try and bribe us. If our debt is paid off and we have a surplus then id like to see that money back as they have done in alberta. |
No question the feds are under estimating the surplus every year, however, I can't say for sure why. As you point out it could be to try and dampen the cries of "we pay too much tax" or maybe it's so they can tell the lobby groups that they don't have the money to fund their pet projects, or it could be excessive fiscal conservativism.... we can't be sure.
That said, if you are trully in favor of getting the debt paid off then the last thing you should be looking for is tax cuts. My thinking.... please continue to tax the outta me (I'm used to it and won't be hurt by the rates staying static) and please don't go increasing spending other then to keep pace with inflation, use every penny of surplus money to pay down the debt but once it's paid off I want both decreased taxes and increased social services! Without the tax revenue we can't pay off the debt.... looking for lower taxes and debt reduction at the same time is like quiting your job and buying a house. |

the problem is that the liberals will keep raising taxes and raising spending. They will never pay off the debt. Thats why we need a conservative (or fiscally conservative minded) government that will acheive this like what has happened in alberta.
You think the NDP or Liberals would have paid of Albertas debt with or without oil?
I dont. |

Into initiatives started under the Eaves government. You have to remember that the first year any government is in office they are stuck with all the commitments that the former government made.
We're only two years into the provincial Liberal government.... it's too early to acurately judge them, however, early indications do not look good. |

Mike harris balanced the budget, paid back a lot of debt and lowered our taxes.
Those werent mistakes.
Any mistakes he made were by stopping the welfare gravy train and pissing off the teachers because he didnt cave into their higher than inflation wage demands. |

i can judge them on all the broken promises and the smoking legislation that is costing a lot of jobs.
The day after the election they raised electricity rates after saying 2 days before that they would not. The night before the election a friend of mine overheard their convention (she was working at the hotel) and heard them talking about raising electricity rates.
Of course this is just hearsay but i have no reason to doubt her. Not only that but she told me this on election day and the liberals made the electricity announcement after they won.
I will never ever vote for mcguinty. |

Agreed, however, currently there is no such option in Ottawa. The nominally conservative party actually wants to scale back debt repayment in favor of tax relief.
What we really need is for someone who doesn't give a about re-election to promise us the world so that we're fooled into voting for them and then do a total 180 once elected and run a minimalist government that can get us back on track in the least amount of time possible. We need someone in the Trudeau vein (attitude wise not policy wise as we all know PET was anything but good with money) to say "I don't give a if you don't like me I'm going to do what I think is in the countries best interest because I know better then you do." Once we are able to pay off our debt then our opportunities are trully endless, I for one am ready to make the sacrafices necessary to have this accomplished. |

that would be my attitude if i got into office.
The problem is that the public doesnt want to hear the truth. WHen they did hear it they got upset. As was the common sense revolution. |
