First off, a DJ is there to play music and to make you dance, not to entertain you like a clown. While crowd interaction does create a more memorable experience, it has nothing to do with how good a DJ actually is. And it shouldn't. I could care less how many times a DJ waves and smiles at the crowd if his mixing/track selection/talent is horrible. It's about the music, so they should focus on that.

Second, PR/Marketing has nothing to do with a DJ's talent. That's all about "exposure" and "promotion", but as we've seen this year a CD release doesn't help at all. Some of the more notable CD releases this year didn't help the DJ's at all in this poll.

that is a blurry line...
Ive seen Bad Boy Bill drop almost 20 tracks on 4 decks in about 10 minutes at the WMC last year. Not only is this great showmanship(without being a clown)but excellent deck skills.(Flawlessly mixed i might add.)

I agree, there is sort of a blurry line, but nevertheless, even that is mostly excellent deck skills. What I meant about being a "clown", is jumping up and down, pumping the crowd up, waving to them, smiling, etc etc. It's not that I find it unnecessary, because I don't (like I said, it definately makes the whole experience better), but it's not something that I think is a requirement for being a good DJ. There's guys like Howells, who are REALLY into the crowd, and then there's those guys like Digweed who probably look up once or twice in the whole set. Both of them as just as good.

I meant THIS year specifically, not previous years.

And back then, even though he moved into a more "electroey/acid" sound as his sets went on, it still stayed very much in the sexy, groovey house. Whereas now, most of his set is very electro-based, with a few housier tracks here and there. Just look at his set from Skybar, or his EM/Kiss100 sets from this year. He's very very into the raw electro sound now.

yessssssss

your right, it is definately a more predominant sound in his sets now then it was before (even though he will still play some tribal /prog / house / whatever). but i wouldnt call him a bandwagon jumper / follower because he was rocking that style of music in the past before anyone thats playing that sound now was playing it at all!

haha +1...Digweed looks like corky on valium when he spins.(I think he just might be lost without Sasha)

fine, i'll give you that. But he's definately not "leading" at the moment either :p Whatever, I'm not complaining. I'm actually really enjoying his current sound.

Nor should it only take into account DJing.

To me there are three major things you have to look at when deciding who are the best DJs

1. There actual skills as a DJ - not being a DJ or knowing much about it....like many people who enjoy the music....this is hard for some of us to get a full grasp of.

2. The Showmanship - how the DJs perform infront of a live audience and how the crowd reacts to them...how a DJ interacts with the crowd is very important

3. CD Release or Marketing - this is important too...if a DJ has a CD come out in a year that is gonna help their marketing and people getting to hear their product. Good CD sales and marketing need to be considered.

haha all 3 are part of being a dj, #3 less than 1/2 but can still be included. great post
glad u agree with me

your right. id never put him in the same category as someone like richie hawtin for pushing the boundaries of music as a leader of the scene or whatever. he just does his own simple thing which is playing badass ing house music!

which is good enough for me ...

Amigo - post part 2! :D

ATB #9, how many fake accounts did he create to accomplish this travesty.

Marco V not top 10, what a disgrace, he's had a good year, a couple of hit singles, album, I'm sure more than a few gigs.

If the poll keeps up the way it's going it'll be a matter of time before Ferry Corsten and Armin are #1.

PVD deserves recognition but not for this year, so I feel that his placement is simply out of a form of 'pity' rather than him getting the actual votes.
