More overrated Jan Johnston, Jes Brieden, or Justine Suissa (pg. 3)

Overrated, a little but it's only because she's so overused. It was fine for a few tracks but her vocals get pretty tiresome, I prefer other vocalists like Kate Cameron or Tracey Ackerman. |
+1 down to the word, her voice sounded really special on some of her earlier tracks... seems to have lost alot of its effect though. i love tracey & kate, took me a while before realising they were actually different singers though lol :clown:
same goes with jes/justine as with jan actually, i liked them both on starchildren/autumn tactics respectively, but they both sound kinda generic in most of their releases since |

Jan is the prototype of epic vocalists. People who put her next to Suissa and Brieden probably haven't heard much before Venus.
Although she went downhill from Reflections after (ironic that Paul seemed to kill her), no one has matched her past profile as queen of the epic anthem, from her low progressive beginning in Anomaly, to the peak days of Mercury & Solace and Skydive, to the golden epic-anthem autumn of Flesh.
The rest of the trance imitators, all of whom sound like fresh recruits to the Justine Suissa School of Vocals, are really no comparison to Jan.
It's really tragic that she seemed to sell out from 2002-03 between Paul van Dyk and Cosmic Gate, and equally sad that the production value of the tracks she has featured in have declined as well. Beachbreeze was the final nail in the coffin, so far as I was concerned; she couldn't go any lower.
Kirsty Hawkshaw is one of the few that beat her out, perhaps simply by seniority. |

I think that Jan Johnston is highly overrated. Her voice just isnt good to me. People might consider her the "female" of trance but if the high on one of her songs is turned up too loud it is torture. Plus I think Skydive is the worst vocal song ever made. What do you think?
Imagine if they did a song together, it would be the triple j effect or something. Freaky names with J. |
10 out of 10 for effort i'll give you that
Funniest thread yet !!. |

I think that a lot of the best vocalists in the last few years (as well as lyrics themselves) havn't come from trance or house music but rather pop music like Dido or Depeche Mode but simply being remixed. Matching perfect vocals on top of perfect tracks ie. Dido - Stoned (Deep Dish mix) or Depeche Mode (any remix, ie. the Lexicon Avenue mix of Only When I Lose Myself).
To be honest a lot of male vocalists are underrated and to me they've been the kings of vocal tracks in the last few years. I suppose they don't count since they aren't singing specificaly for the genre but I prefer remixed tracks most of the time. Not only do the lyrics tend to shine a lot more but the vocals are often a hell of a lot better.
It's amazing what some producers can do with a song from a totally different genre. |

For overratedness? yes, I agree.
I hate Hawkshaws voice, I find she tends to screech a bit.
As for Jan Johnston, I quite like her voice. It may not be fantastic, but she uses what she has really well.
Out of these three though, probably Justine Suissa is most overrated (for me), but then maybe I've only heard her bad songs...........
oh, and agreed about Dido having one of the best voices going around, I love her to bits, absolutely fantastic. |

Jan Johnston is in noooo way over rated... probably Justine Suissa is the most... Jes Brieden I cant think of any of her tracks off the top of my head lol...
But damn, bust JJ track is Freefall - Skydive (ANY MIX BUT ESPECIALLY THE MARA MIX!!!!)
That and Flesh (Tilt's Going Home Mix).... ahhhh goodness on a stick!
I just wanna also say that sure a lot of her tracks sound the same vocally, but no one else can ever quite sound like her.
Oh another vocalist I love, but has only done one good non-cheesy song (mix) I know of is Maria Nayler... Angry Skies (Tilts Terrstial Vox Mix)
lol tho that Babyland song is catchy from a few years back! :p |

| Jan is HORRIBLY overrated. The generic track by her or with her is simply godawfully cheesy, and her voice does it's own to add to it. |

All 3 are very talented, and to call them overated is a joke. They make a few so-so songs, and the negativity begins. Meanwhile Dido, Sarah Mclachlan, etc.... puts out a CD with 14 tunes, 3 or 4 which are good to great, the rest suck ass and they get praised like EVERYTHING they do is gold. Every artist has their hits and their album filler tunes. Lets not judge these girlies by the "filler" tunes they have done, but by their hits.
overated....NOT! |

Maybe it's because Dido and Sarah Mclachlan have a hell of a lot more vocal and lyrical talent than Jan Johnston, Jes Brieden and Justine Suissa put together.
Even when their album is just so so, there is usualy a lot of remixability there either with the vocals or with the beat itself. Fischerspooners new album is an example of a album with good remixing behind it (so far). Although as far as vocals go I'd rather listen to a so so album from Dido than Justine Suissa giving it her all on an album of her own since well, it would suck. |

the thing i don't like about a lot of the songs that Jan Johnston sings in is a lot of them are too dialoguey...
and i don't like any of the justine sussia songs because the people she usually sings for just write terrible lyrics...
i dunno, they all have nice voices, but either work with people that write bad lyrics for them...
i think these days i appreciate the less known vocalists in songs...or some just amazing talented women like
Sia
Imogen Heap
now THOSE are some awesome voices... |
