halo ther CORe. i've got a few questions for anyone who can help me out...
1. i'm going to Greece next February and i'd like to learn the basics of the language before i go just so i'm not completely lost... i've shopped around for a few books/CDs but i'm wondering if there are any specific products you people can recommend for learning a language. i've already read a few reviews on Amazon.com but i'm looking for your personal experiences. what books/CDs worked for you?
2. do a lot of the people in Greece speak/understand English?
3. i'm going with a tour group so the entire trip is pretty much planned out for me, but if i do have some free time, what are some cool things to check out?
i'll post more questions as they come up, but those are just the basic things i'm wondering about right now. also if anyone has any tips/recommendations about visiting Greece i'd love to hear them! this is my first time travelling outside of the US so i'm kind of a n00b...
thanks! :D |

jesus, an 8 year old getting stabbed is ed up.
i'm a little tweaked out by the thought of thieves and other randomly sketchy people... i'm going with a choir director's group so we're mostly going to be touring churches and stuff like that. as much as i'd like to check out some clubs and nightlife stuff, there's no way i'm wandering off by myself. |

put it this way- it can happen anywhere and what happened to my lil bro's friend is an extreme case. kid-killing isn't a national sport in greece but lord knows the mediterranean is rife with pick-pockets. that's all i would be afraid of.
i'd be more scared of greek men with unibrows. :nervous:  :nervous: |

i'm not afraid... i just don't want to put myself in a vulnerable position. it's one thing to go out to a club by myself in Chicago where i know people and i have friends there and i feel comfortable with my surroundings, than to go out to a club in a foreign country where i know NO ONE and am unfamiliar with my surroundings. that's all i was saying... not to mention i'm a girl. and i weigh 105lbs. and i have no way to defend myself from scary men who want to rape an unsuspecting little American girl, lol. |

oh, myra- i dont consider myself an expert at travelling but i do recommend a few things.
1> make copies of everything that's important for your travel: passport, credit/debit cards, license/id's, airplane tickets.
2>take two wallets: one credit card in each, some money in each, one atm in one wallet, one debit card in the other, etc. only carry one wallet and lock the other in ur luggage.
edit: greek men are much more forward than men from other western countries so prepare to get ur ass grabbed if u're in a club and possibly even a lil harrassment. it pays to go to clubs with a guy or two or your arm.

my mom brought the idea up to me a few months ago. we had been talking about going to Europe for a while and once she found out that my brother was going to be working in DC over winter break she offered to take me to Europe. we're going as part of a music director tour, she gets a deal on it through her job as a choir director.
here's a more detailed itinerary...
Singing psalms in the Footsteps of St. Paul...The letters of the Apostle, which remain relevent today, will come alive. We'll adopt Greek traditions and cultural nuances, while we plan our choral pilgrimage, ensuring our return. Local musicians will treat us to sacred and traditional music of the region. Taste the taverna cuisine. It's all good!
Day 1 > Tuesday: Depart to Greece.
Day 2 > Wednesday: Arrive Athens - Delphi.
Day 3 > Thursday: Highlights of Delphi.
Visit the Sanctuary of Apollow and explore the Museum. Ferry crossing from Patras to Corinth.
Day 4 > Friday: Highlights of Corinth - Epidavros.
In Corinth, the Apostle arrived in A.D. 50-51 to preach the Christian faith and write the first of his epistles. Prayer service/informal singing among the ruins of the ancient temple where the Apostle preached. Continue to Epidavros, in ancient times a therapeutic pilgrimage destination.
Day 5 > Saturday: Corinth Canal - Athens.
Travel the Corinth Canal, one of the wonders of the world. Half-day at leisure in Athens.
Day 6 > Sunday: Athens.
Attend Mass at the Cathedral of St. Dionysius. Tour the capital city visiting the Roman Market, temples and the ancient Agora. Walk across Maris Hill where Paul addressed the philosophers of Areopagus. See St. Paul's Well and the Acropolis
Day 7 > Monday: Return from Athens. |
